i have been using hpoo with success, but shredding it with my hands is a really big pain in the ass. i have been told that a wood chipper is the best thing to use for shredding hpoo but the only ones i could find cost at a staring price of $150. so i have a few questions.
1. could i use a food processor instead, or would this be like using a coffee grinder?
2. does any one know where to find a wood chipper cheaper?
3. in either of the two can i shred straw also?
thanx for the help.

Have you looked into renting a small one for a hour from a local yard? Most cites have a place you can rent equipment like a mulching lawnmower or a weedwacker or wood chippers. If you are looking to save a few buck The one around here is like 35 bucks for the afternoon with the mulch bring back a poo covered wood chipper they might be mad so at least hose it down if you use that.

thanx yal. i did not even think about renting one, but then again i cant even find one around me. i think i am going to go with the food processor for the time being, unless some one else chimes in and says it wont work. the reason i want to shred straw is so i can use it for compost.
Does anybody know if i can use coco coir instead of straw for compost? i know it would probably be expensive as fuck but i want some more options.
Flavoraid, wouldnt that make a lil bit of a mess?

Coir will compost. Do you have a lawnmower? If you are doing enuff just put the straw it in a pile and shoot it into a kid pool stood up or put on the bag or mulching accessorie on. A weed wacker will work in a garbage pale or tote to keep it in just be caruful and rake the grass after its gettin composted anyways maybe a little water to keep it from flying around.

I've heard that you'll go through food processors pretty fast using them on straw. That might not be very cost efficient either. Whenever I cut grass with a lawnmower the grass usually comes pretty fine. I've been thinking about running the lawnmower over straw on cement. I think renting the equipment is a great idea. If you're doing a bulk substrate, you can rent the equipment first, then go back and buy the equipment. Then you won't have to worry about it. Time is money. I've thought about hosting a straw cutting party, but I'd rather just drink if you know what I mean.
