I'm in SW WA in the foothills between the coast and I-5. I have been picking Chanterelles in this exact area for years and never once saw a single Trumpet. This year I am finding them all over.
Were they brought in with last years wind storm?
I considered a Helvella for the unknown but This mushie is not just a cup it has a thick stem about the thickness of a large index finger, then the cup like cap sits on the stem. The stem is a firm yet translucent black jelly like material. I have never seen anything like it before. I've been picking in this area many years.
I'm stumped. I dont believe its a Helvella, I have seen those before, this is different.

where are use to the elastic fibros helvella with distintive cap , i know but some helvella have really crazy shape this is from mushroom expertSaddles: The Genus Helvella
[ Ascomycetes > Pezizales > Helvellaceae . . . ]
by Michael Kuo
The mushrooms in Helvella, sometimes called the "Elfin Saddles," have irregular caps that are smooth or "wavy" and are saddle-shaped, lobed, or cuplike. The caps are not brightly colored, and are usually white, cream, buff, brown, gray, black, or tan. Helvella species grow on the ground or on rotting wood. Most species fruit in summer and fall, but several can be found in the winter and spring in warm coastal areas. Not treated below; eventually the cuplike species of Helvella will be treated in a key to the cup fungi. See the pages for Helvella macropus, Helvella corium, Helvella acetabulum, and Helvella queletii.) Cup Fungi
from the cup fungi key that i could not find a good match i see this
This portion of the key is not yet developed. For a few commonly collected species, see Aleuria rhenana, Helvella macropus, Helvella corium, Helvella queletii, and Plectania nanfeldtii. this what i think is the most close picture Helvella corium by Michael Kuo
Helvella corium is a small species, recognized by its cup-like to flat, jet black cap and its relatively smooth, blackish stem, which may develop shallow ribs in older specimens. It fruits in late spring or early summer. Apparently, it has a preference for sandy soil and areas of debris in northern North America. Edibility is not known for this species; I do not recommend it. Description: Ecology: Probably saprobic; growing in woods, in sandy soil, or in debris areas; late spring and early summer; apparently northern in distribution (documented from Idaho and Michigan; the illustrated mushrooms were collected in Canada). Cap: up to 4 cm; cup-shaped to nearly flat; upper surface dark black and smooth, or roughened near the center; under surface black, sometimes whitish at the margin, finely hairy (use a magnifying glass). Stem: 1-4 cm long; .2-15 mm thick; black above, sometimes grayish below; smooth or with shallow ribs when mature. Microscopic Features: Spores 17-20 x 10.5-12.5 µ; elliptical; smooth; with one oil droplet.
acordin to some pictures and the description since to fit and seem to be a not so coomond specie, look it about it a little to see if you find any relationsh i see and read and find many specially what said that in older specimen developend ribs , and fruting seasom , color , . of course if you send a specimen to some one with a microscope will know real fast do , is dificult to id mushrooms for a picture but i still in the battle , just kidding i only think i´m right , haha all my best vibrations.

how cold has it been around there? Do they have similar fruiting characteristics as regular common chanterelles?

Its been consistantly in the low 50s by day and low40s high 30s by night. It has been pouring down rain now for two weeks. I have been finding the Black Trumpets in the exact same habitat as the Chanterelles, literally side by side. I think the Chanterelles are finished for the season, there are a few left but you can tell that they are on the way out. The Trumpets are still going strong. I found quite a few today in new patches.
