I'd get both and mix em.
Then you can have the fine verm fill the gaps between the coarse stuff.

I'd get the bag of corse verm...

and then post a picture of the bag and the actual size of the verm.

you can always put the verm in a food processor or a mixer and break it down a little to the proper size.

somehow i doubt that using a hammer on verm would be very effective at breaking it up..
put it in a pillow case and roll it between your hands or something. you'd get tennis elbow trying to do it with a hammer.
and if anything you'd just flatten it instead of breaking it up.

It's as squeezable as a marshmallow, or even softer. If you squeeze it you'll end up with a flake of material. You need to roll it or blend it to break it up.

I normally use fine grade unless the fine grade for sale at that time is particularly powdery. Have a look at them, see what size the bits are. If it reminds you of a powder, it is too fine, if it reminds you of a bag or rice it's good if it reminds you of a bag of corn it is a tad to coarse and if it reminds you of a bag of marbles it is way too coarse.
