Late Bloomer Shroomer?

From what I've read on here it seems that most people had their first psychedelic experience at a young age, most likely in there teens. I'm curious to know whether or not I'm one of the few exceptions... I had my first experience this year at age 27. I had plenty of chances to try psychedelics before when I was younger and although I was very interested, I just never felt ready for some reason. I experimented with cannabis but was always leery of shrooms or acid because I had read that they could change the way you think forever and I wasn't ready to have such a drastic shift in consciousness. I felt that there was too much that I hadn't done in life; I wanted to find direction career-wise, be stable and attain a certain level of maturity before a substance that was capable of changing my mental outlook entered my brain.
Just this year the opportunity literally landed on my doorstep... one of my good friends brought over a bag full of shrooms. I knew it was my time, I felt as ready as I would ever be… my life was where I wanted it, and I felt experienced enough to take on what ever this alien looking fungus had in store for me. To make a long story short, the experience turned out to be without a doubt the most enlightening, uplifting, euphoric, profound, emotionally powerful experiences of my life. It was like nothing I had feared or imagined but I instantly understood how such an experience could change you forever. I was awestruck with philosophical wonder and flooded with emotional intensity that I had never known before. I felt a strong cosmological connection with nature and the universe that I knew was true. The hallucinations I saw seemed to defy the limitations of beauty and were painted with the most vibrant colors that could possibly exist. There was an incredible sense of ‘purely living in the now’ – I felt as if that present moment was the best experience that would ever happen. My laugher became ecstatic, and my emotional state was so profoundly happy that it brought me to tears.
I’m wondering if anybody else waited till later in life before they opened up to the fungus. Please correct me if I’m wrong but I remember reading somewhere that the Mazatec Indians of Mexico only allow men over 30 to use entheogens, because they believe a certain level of maturity needs to be reached in order to appreciate and learn from the experience. I don’t know if that’s true, nor do I know whether my experience would have been any different if I was younger.
Are there any other late bloomer shroomers out there?.... or anybody caring to shed some light on this topic?

Timothy Leary, one of the most famous psychedelic experimenters had his first trip when he was 40. I also read a trip report on erowid where a son had introduced his father to LSD for the first time. I'm assuming he was also older.
It's uncommon but it happens. Also, welcome to our world now.

aw, great post! I, like you, was always weary about trying shrooms, or any 'drug' for that matter. Even to this day I pretty much only stick with all natural drugs, lol. The first time I did shrooms was when I was 20. I tripped at my house with two close friends on a free weekend. It was a great experience, it really opened my mind. This was only a couple years ago and i've only done them one other time since. I would really like to do them more but I don't know many people who do them. Circumstances have to be ideal for me to do them. Have to have them, have to have someone to do them with, need to have lots of free time, and need to be in a good place mentally. All the stars dont align often enough.

Very interesting topic, and I hold contrasting views about it.
I'm sure that people who wait like you did, not out of fear, but just awaiting the right time, are bound to have a good experience and like it. I guess you were mature enough to do them when you decided to wait, just because you decided to wait. I'm sure you did the right thing though. I myself tried LSD at 21, but I hadn't exactly waited, it was the first time anything of the sort crossed my path, and I had no idea what to expect. And thank God I decided to go for it, because it changed my life for the better. With hindsight, it was a crazy thing to do: taking a totally unknown (to me) drug on a completely immature mindset with hundreds of people around isn't exactly a mature thing to do. Given the choice, I'd certainly do it again though, which goes to show that every situation is different, and there may be rules, but then there really aren't any.
Now that I'm older and I have a 16y/o stepson, I'd like to offer him the chance, if he's interested and wants to do it, to take a few steps in the psychedelic world. What I have in mind is exactly the opposite of what you did: I think it would be interesting for him to have that experience *before* he makes any final choices (college- and careerwise, among others), and before his mind is completely shaped. I think 17-like is the ideal age to get started, provided you know where you're going, you do a lot of reading beforehand and you decide to do it for the right reasons. I've never really discussed the matter with him before (he does know about my experiences and about the life-changing and positive impact psychedelics have had on me), but I'm really curious to know what he will decide. Of course, it won't be a 'now or never' offer: he can still decide to give it a try at 27 I just want him to know the experience is available to him under favorable conditions.
