i was thinking of doing this same thing in closet that gets really cold during the winter (in the 50s)...if it has a thermostat i dont think there would be a problem.
just make sure there is nothing flammable near the heater in the closet and you should be fine.

problem is the heat and the fan thats built into the type i have would add a drying effect.

also are you fruiting or incubating?
fruits do fine at the temps you have in your closet.
incubation works at the same temp even though itll colonize at a slightly lower speed (should hardly notice) 70-72 is fine.
maybe build a tit incubator with a aquarium heater and fountain water pump for circulation of the water.

right now there are a bunch of jars that need to colonize... its been a week today and i'm not seeing a difference and i know the temp needs to rise

are you using grains or pf tek?
either way if you feel comfortable using the heater in the closet then go for it...temps in the low to mid 80s are ideal for colonization and should speed it up a little.
but you may not even notice a difference with an incubator.
the hardest part of this hobby is the waiting imo.
pf jars are always slow to colonize with multi-spore inoculations from my experience. and since you cant shake them, the time till full colonization is even longer.

a portable heater will work, also a light bulb could be used to heat the closet, but as always don't create a fire hazard.
