Trafficking Baking Soda December 13, 2007 - wkrg.com
A few pounds of baking soda landed Malcolm Williams in hot water. Police say he sold the household product as cocaine!
The 17,000 dollar deal went down in West Mobile on Wednesday.
Undercover agents bought 2 kilos of what they were told was cocaine. Mobile Police tell us that Williams claimed the coke was being brought in from Atlanta.
Shortly after being arrested, Williams reportedly admitted to police that he faked the drug deal for the money!
Officer John Young with the Mobile Police Department says since he presented it as the real deal... he still gets charged with trafficking! "If you sell M&Ms as tablets to get high, if you sell baking soda as if it's cocaine or if you sell oregano as if it's marijuana, those charges are the same. You're presenting that substance as the illegal narcotic."
Cocaine trafficking carries a penalty of up to 99 years in prison!

Then I should be OK selling cocaine as baking powder since baking powder es a legal non-narcotic.
BTW, it's funny how freely they use the word narcotic, cocaine's everything but narcotic.

Funnybunny that is pretty funny. And other dude, ridiculous is not spelled with an E. You wouldn't spell ridicule with an E so why would you spell ridiculous with an E? In case you are retarded, they are both sort of the same word.

This charge is retarded. The man should be charged with fraud and not trafficking.
What if he sold the cop a gun and told him it was cocaine? Is that still trafficking?

Prosecuting someone for selling something legal as a controlled substance is just so stupid. Where do they get off with this stuff? So unbelievable.
Although I'm glad that dude is going to jail. People selling fake drugs should have their ass kicked.

Mobile is in Alabama, not Louisiana.
It doesn't make since to be getting cocaine from ATL when you're living in a port city which is known for supplying good coke.

at least they didn't mistake garlic for shrooms LOLZ. But I don't understand a law that says if someone is stupid enough to buy something that is obviously not what it is intended to be then you are sentenced to life. So even if you sold them a cake and said "yo this coke iz legit" you'd go to jail because some idiot bought a cake.

He should be dead for selling 17grand worth of baking soda. He is lucky that it was to a pig. This idiot deserves no sympathy, just imagine if you just wasted 17 grand on fake drugs.

You know more than most on this forum, but your righteous attitude is really getting annoying.
Stealing 17 grand does not deserve death, nor 99 years.
This is a fraud case, imo, and should be prosecuted as such. There are ample provisions to criminally prosecute someone for high-value frauds like this without legislating "counterfit drug" offenses.

Drug deal setups are entrapment and should be illegal anyways.
I've always loved how the American government defines entrapment law as "tricking someone into breaking the law and them punishing them for it is illegal*"
* Except when we want to do it.

Listen, if you sell someone 17 grand worth of fake drugs they have every right to murder you. Not only are you stealing $17,000, but you are stealing $17,000 from a drug dealer and you reap what you sow. I'm not saying the cops should have killed him, I'm saying if the cops weren't cops. This rule is pretty standard in the higher levels of the drug game, you rob someone for a lot of money and they catch you, you die. You snitch on someone and they catch you, you die. Not everyone implements them though, as a lot of people are pussies.

Why is it okay for a drug buyer to kill, but not a cop?
I agree there is s different moral situation, as the cops have more readily available alternatives, but that doesn't make it acceptable.
Killing someone for a 17k fraud is wrong.
And what does it matter what the convention is in that segment of society? Perhpas gives the person fair warning, but that doesn't make it okay.

Steal $17,000 from me and watch what happens.
On another note, remember that the $17,000 dollars was not "stolen" from the cops, the cops gave it to him. Further, it's not the "cops'" money. It is tax money.

yeah, you're right, it wasn't really a theft, just fraud (though about the same thing)
But I really don't care what you'd do to someone who conned you for cash. I never said this guy was in the right, but this crap about he needs to die is bullshit.
On another note, I wonder if this guy was even capable of getting that much drugs. It appears he wasn't afraid they were police (or maybe he was ignorant enough to think giving them baking soda would mean he's okay), so why would he try to con them? I imagine he would have made enough money anyways, so either he was quite greedy or was not in the position to supply the police with their drug anyways- in which case its another low-level criminal enticed into crime by prohibition.

He was a moron obviously. Who the fuck would be dumb enough to buy 2 kilos of baking soda? Its not like it was lidocaine, or something that looks, compresses, and tastes just like coke. The police could make this bust everyday if they wanted to, thousands of stupid asshole that will gladly take your money and give you beat shit. Also, I am not really saying that someone that steals 17 grand deserves to die, but the drug game is a different business and you know this before you get into it. There are rules, if you don't want to worry about the consequences, don't sell drugs (or fake drugs).

while i do agree with you to an extent about the "drug game" i.e. if certain drug dealers i kno spent that much on baking soda hed be dead for it. and i cant say if the same thing happend to me he wouldnt be either. but... i also have to point out that you are a COMPLETE FUCKING FOOLISH FUCK if you buy two keys and dont taste the shit before hand... everyone i know with or buying this much weight does this so... thats about the gist of it... really he should just go to jail for fraud as prreviously stated.

How ridiculous. This is fraud, he didn't posses and deal in drugs, now did he? It proves again how sick the American system of justice is (now and then). But hey, we already knew that: http://www.stellaawards.com/2006.html This one should be nominated!

BUULLSHIT! u r wrong, u CAN sell fake drugs and not get charged
False. I don't have time but I'm sure someone will come along and cite the appropriate law statutes. You CAN and WILL get fucked up the ass by law enforcement for selling fake drugs as the real thing. Why would you possibly think otherwise? You think LEO gives a fuck if the shit you're selling is real or not? The judge going to sympathize with you since the drugs were fake? Get real man, this is the real world where you get charged for misrepresenting legal but fake substances as their illicit counterparts.
