question about lighting

im planning on starting a pot grow in my friends basement.
anyway my question is will any old HPS light bulb work? i have visited many sites that offer cheap HPS ranging from 10 USD-30 USD compared to the 100+ for the actual setup for growing. i know pretty much nothing when it comes to indoor growing, just the basics, but i figure it cant be too much harder than outdoor. im not looking to get into an advanced grow-op here, just a simple 4 or 5 small plant grow until i can take clones, then i will put money into expensive equipment.
the area i plan on growing in is an unfinished basement, very open and is not heated. - but i figure heat should not be a problem since the bulbs produce enough heat as it is, and i can turn a heater on to keep it above freezing when the light is off correct?

dont pay $10-$30 for an HPS its probably very cheaply made and could cause a fire. your probably better off getting a bunch of T8 fluorescent shoplight fixtures to get started. my HPS bulb alone cost $120

I tried to go the cheap way recently, it didn't turn out too good. I replaced my old bulb with a 400w phillips from HD for about $20. If you are gonna take the time and use the electricity to grow, at least get the most you can out of your efforts. mod edit: no non sponsor links.

a bulb is a bulb is a bulb..
cheeper hps bulbs might not adresse the best spectrum of light and put out more alot of heat but..
just throw the fucker away after one grow, you will be able to tell when they are loosing vigor!
as far as the temps, heat the basement with 1kw hps

since i am on the topic of lighting, can i move my dormant cacti into a closet with just fluorescent light? the room they are in now i think is getting too cold, but its the only place in the house with enough room for them to get any light at all.

If your cacti are dormant, then light isn't important. Light is important if they're growing but if they're dormant who cares? And if you want your cacti to stay dormant, you want them nice and cool.
Warming your cacti up during the winter and putting them under fluorescent lights seems like what you'd do if you wanted them to etiolate. Just my two cents.

i think its gets down to freezing in that room though, its not insulated and temperatures at night have been getting down to 10-15 degrees outside. i dunno, its too cold for me to even stand going in there to check.

Well in that case man, it's probably best you don't let them freeze.

so long as it stays above freezing they should be fine, suggest u get a thermometer in there and see exactly how cold it gets... or insulate the room
