He wants to get a Reverse Osmosis for the water in our area - to treat PH and remove Trace minerals. Is this necessary for highgrade marijuana? What other techniques do you use instead?

actually it will help alot..for starters its nice to start off with water that has 0 ppm in it(no dissolved solids) when you add nutes to water with solids in it ,you have no way of knowing with those solids are ,so it can really fuck with your nutes..ie too much calcium or what ever..
but yeah, if your serious about growing good buds ,then a reverse osmosis system will pay for it self, not to mention you get great pure drinking /cooking water:)
see the gallon milk jug

edit..almost forgot ,your water will also be 7.0 ph ..which is netrual, which is great for flushing ,but when adding nutes you will probably have to add ph up ,as nutes will drop your ph quickly and in soil i keep mine at 6.7 or so...

a REALLY good investment if your doing hydro imo
less important if your in soil i think..

It's just more important in soil than you think.
Depending on the conditions of your water, you may be able to get away with it. If you do not have hard or salt water(residue left when evaporating a cup of water?), you can probably grow good herb without RO. Get a TDS meter and test your tap water, that is the only way to know for sure.

makes sense was naive for me to think everybody is on a municipal water supply

i live in a very hard water area, i grew high grade organic weed in soil just using the municipal water supply for many years and ive never used a reverse osmosis pump...

yah, you can get away with using just plain tap water, but if you have the spare cash why not go for it? Not only will it give a balanced, nutrient free, water, i believe it also removes the chlorine and fluoride they put in the water.
When i grew my first plants i bought distilled water, then i got sick of dealing with 2983829382 gallon jugs and started using tap water. I honestly did not notice much, if any, difference.
