nice pictures you have an amanita there for sure but what specie is hard to tell to many in that area that i don´t know will tell you a few gueeses but depend on the records of your area amanita cokerii, amanita strobilomyces, amanita muscaria var alba but don´t resemble to much a muscaria variety , more like the others also is short can be a feature. all my best vibrations alan or toxic man or cc will get it i bet.

The overall appearance suggests one of the Lepidellas, but the bit of orange showing on the cap surface where the cap has split suggests it may actually be a distorted A. muscaria. Try rubbing some of the warts off of a bit of the cap so we can see the cap surface.
Has it been dry there recently?
Happy mushrooming!

yeah, that base definitely looks suggestive of the section amanita near muscaria and there is clearly yellowing rather than just orrange where the cuticle is cracked/split. in this stage the cap is completely covered by the universal veil. the collector might be able to actually peel it back andwhere it is particularly moist.
[edit: i don't know why i bothered replying before reading TM's full post]
i should note that i am bad with the lepiotoid mushrooms.

wow! very odd!
It could perfectly be (it was even my first guess)an abhort of some variation of Amanita muscaria. what is troubling is that, A.muscaria in that phase of development (with the cap cap clearly opened) usually as a more scattered universail vail (warts) rather then those complete remains that are almost the entire egg, if A.muscaria it was expected to have a more visible cuticle, all the rest of the mushroom look like A.muscaria.
interesting find

yours would have been red/orange had it matured... seems as if dry conditions have stopped that mushroom in its tracks before the cap could grow big enough to spread the volva over the cap surface and give the text book appearance u would expect... search for some pics of immature a. muscaria and u will see how they grow and perhaps understand better wot happened to your mushroom...

Really?? I find it one of the more interesting clades.
There's this woman by the name Else Vellinga, she taught this microscopy class alan and i took. Now SHE's got that area covered. She named off some genera of Lepiotoid mushroom I'd never heard of prior. She's way cool. She was even able to finally describe the distinguishing features between Chlorophyllum brunneum and C. rhacodes!!
