Any way to prevent bacillus in birdseed????
    #770675 - 07/23/02 01:05 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

I haven't heard anything lately but I've been out for a while. Has anyone come up w. a way to prevent bacillus (the gooey, brown, slimy stuff) that occurs in birdseed as a contam?? Does lowering the water content help?? Also, would it be a huge risk to eat shrooms grown off a cake that had lipstick mold before casing??

My friend has also had some problems with this sneaky slimey bastard......lowering water content does help dramatically.....as does being sure everything is sterile.......but if its not out of control, the mycelium will almost always overtake it(but if it smells i advise against this) i have heard of no problems of eating your fruits then.........as for the lipstick stuff....i dunno i wouldnt fuck with it....most really colorful contams are the worst ones(to your health)

Adam

I've found that a preliminary washing step makes a pretty big difference. . .as well as having proper water content. Just using a hand strainer to rinse it works wonders.

Let the birdseed soak overnight in some water. When you will drain out the water the next day, you can smell some bacteria. Just load the now soaked seed into your pint jars and use 10cc's of water for each jar and pc for 1 hour. Has been working for me ever since.

It's hard to tell, but I'm 90% sure that is some byproduct (waste) from the mycelium. Sometimes u get a lot more than other times, but basically, I've been told that everything living breathes and gives off waste. What u got there is the mycelium taking a shit.....should be harmless!!!
