I got a cavity.

How much does a needle hurt that they inject you with.

How much does the filling hurt after.

the needle hurts but not that bad...it's bearable. afterwards you'll just be numb.

what really hurts....is the dentist bill.

In my experience, the slower they give you the shot, the better. I think it's bearable if they go slow but one time my dentists hand twitched a little and it spurted into my gums.... OMG. Just tell your Dentist to take it easy . Regardless, The shot isn't like unbearable anyway. They say you'll feel a pinch, and that's just what it feels like.

They smear an anesthetic gel on your gums before they give you the shot. It just feels like a slight pressure or maybe a pinch.

When I was little, I was scared of getting the shot, so since the cavity was small the dentist drilled without the novacaine. That stood up as the worst pain of my life until about a year ago. Halfway through the procedure I was begging for the shot but he persisted that it was too late.

I don't like the dentist anymore then the next guy, but people make it out to be worse then it is.  Yeah, there is some pain and discomfort involved, but unless you're a total wimp about pain its nothing too bad with todays modern dental practices.  And novocaine is a wonderful thing!  I can't imagine dentistry in the days before novocaine!

Worst pain I ever had at the dentist only lasted a few seconds.  I was getting a root canal done (one of many that I've had) and although I had been "numbed" with shots in my gums the nerve in the tooth was not yet numb.  When the drill broke through and struck the raw nerve I almost came out of the chair.  The dentist told me he had to inject some novocaine directly into the open nerve.  He said, "It'll hurt really bad for a few seconds then you'll feel nothing else in that tooth ever again."  So I grabbed hold of the chair and told him to go for it.  When he hit that nerve with the needle I'm surprised I didn't rip the armrests off that fucker!!  Then, in about 3 seconds, the whole side of my face went numb.  After that he could've sawed my jaw off with a hack saw and I wouldn't have felt it until the novocaine wore off.

How you gonna say that and not say what happened a year ago?

Anyway yeah, I just had one drilled at without the novocaine recently but everything worked out okay apparently. I guess it wasn't too deep.

To the OP, don't sweat it so much. I've had my share of cavities and it's no big deal. The shot's just a pinch and after it wears off, any pain you might have will be minimal. I actually kinda like still being numb after getting out of the chair. I was thinking about asking for the shot just for the hell of it last time.

EDIT: I forgot, main thing is to make sure they got your bite right. If your dentist is any good you shouldn't have to worry.

They'll give you an anesthetic gel before they give you the shot.

HOWEVER I had to have an extra tooth removed and they fucked up with the anesthetic shots and ended up giving me, I shit you not, seven shots in the roof of my mouth before it actually kicked in. It hurt like a bitch, it did NOT just feel like a little pinch like they said.

The other time I had it done it was fine though.

Yea when I was really little I kept nocking the shot out of their hand and got a 1.5 hour long supper expensive filling.

I am still that scared of needles. My hearts already racing shit.

One time I went to the dentist and they didn't freeze it good enough. Let me tell you, once you've felt a drill go into your tooth, you'll have wished you'd have gotten a dozen needles.

a needle hurts a lot less than if you dont go to the dentist, let your cavity grow to the root, and have an absess. THEN will you know what pain is.

Okay, last spring I got really sick and had to go through a number of painful experiences over my nine week hospital stay.  Namely the NG (food) tube shoved into my nose, and the 7 spinal taps...  They kept missing the proper nerves, and each time they re-tried the anesthetic wore off more and more.  :syringe:

Ugh, I wasn't allowed to drink or eat anything for about 3 weeks.  Worst cottonmouth ever.  I spent countless hours imagining myself drinking Kool-Aid.

Some people are more sensitive to this shit then others it seems.

I've had plenty of dentist visits when i was younger. When i was getting a root canal done one time, they gave me a buncha shots but the nerve would strike all of the sudden when they started drilling. finally they said il just have to deal with it cause they couldn't give me any more shots.

The shots feel weird but are nothing compared to real pain.

And i NEver got any nitrous during my visits :frown:

Probably need to get that filling done sooner than later... fuck  :shake:

A cavity really isn't that big of a deal. When they inject you to numb your gums you will feel pressure on the gum...but it doesn't really hurt. If you can get nitrous try to get that. My dentist gives it for free . What really hurts is getting crowns....uhhg that feels bad.

You will probably hurt once the medicine they shoot into your gums start wearing off.

I would suggest getting something other than an amalgam filling.

It's debated whether the amount of mercury in it can cause harm, but if I had a choice, I would choose to not have a highly toxic substance put in my mouth.

It's not that bad. Being scared of it makes it bad. The needle is uncomfortable but not usually painful, and after that you're numb so it just feels kind of weird.

The filling doesn't really hurt after.

I'm getting a filling today actually.

I've got some of those and the white kind. Honestly, I don't think they would do the amalgams if there was anything to worry about. But from an aesthetic standpoint the white fillings are much nicer. You can't even tell they're there. With the amalgams, you open your mouth and everybody says "Holy crap, you've had a lot of cavities."

I only have had one cavity in my life, unless I had one in my baby teeth before they fell out.
All they do is use a cotton swab around the injection site with something like orajel, so your gums are already numb before they inject the novicane. i didnt feel nothing when they injected it, no pain at all. I waited 10 minutes, then they started the drilling process, it was all good, I didn't feel anything, totally numb!
it was so cool, I smoked some weed before the dentist visit, so I already was mellow...it helped a lot!
