doubt it, the serials are generally specific to a certain type of windows version, perhpas if you found the same version that the serial on the box corresponds to
I'd just download a working slipstreamed XP pro and use the serial/crack in the torrent.
Then you can search for how to avoid window's genuine advantage online, it can be done.

Probably not, and yes.
If you look at any Windows media, you will see a code embossed on the disk somewhere (usually around the spindle area.) This code identifies the pressing of the media and changes over time. The key on the side of the box will only work with a specific media code. The OS will install, but probably won't activate. However, all is not lost. Choose to activate by phone, call the 1-800 number, talk to the nice tech from India, answer ONE when asked how many computers you have installed this on, and type in the activation code they give you in return.

They also might ask you if it is an OEM version of XP or if you bought it retail.

I've never had them not give me a key. You are talking to somebody in India that makes 30 cents a day and doesn't give a rats ass about Microsoft, from what I can tell. Not that it matters, but if they ask, tell them your laptop died and the computer store replaced the hard drive. If they push more, then the store that fixed the laptop installed the OS, but didn't activate it and you don't have the media. Again, I've never had a problem... the big question is "how many machines installed upon" and the big answer is "one".

That's good to know.
I tried this because I changed the motherboard and couldn't login to windows anymore (damn, what a nice MS surprise!). I called microsoft (I think it was the dutch helpdesk) and they more or less told me to fuck off and call the OEM seller. They told me I wasn't allowed to replace a motherboard myself so I had to download an illegal version of XP.

There's not even a real person involved anymore, the whole process is automated with voice recognition. I like it, I don't feel as bad lying to a machine. Just say "yes" you've installed it before, it's on "one" computer, and "yes" you recently installed new hardware. Bam, new activation code.
