Time to take it in?????

My kid crashed her laptop...again. Probably trying to disable cyber-nanny or something. It the second time it's happened in about 6 months and the last time her Mom took it in it cost $200 to get it back up and running. I told her to have my kid as a user account only, but she didn't and she has had Admin. rights all along.
I got the Windows disk from them and tried all the options on the screen that it boots up on, but none work. One screen says to use the set up disk and press "r" to repair the corrupted config file, but the disk won't kick in...if the windows disk is even the right one to be using. I have a few others that came with the PC and they are "Application- For reinstalling Dell tool systen software", Application-For reinstalling Sonic Record now 6.5 software" and Application-Cyberlik PowerDVD"
I went into set up at boot up and disabled the cd drive as the first option and nothing so I changed it back. Here are some screenshots to give y'all an idea of what's going on. Theyy are in sequence of my choice and then the result...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Peace.

Put in the Windows XP
Boot
When you get to the SECOND prompt where you can press R, do that.
It will detect your other install, and list it in a box, then below that it should say something like:
"Press D to Delete, Press R to repair, Press Esc to Exit"
Can't remember the wording off the top of my head.

Cool man, thanks! while I was waiting for a response I went back into set up at boot up and saw that it wasn't the cd drive that was first on the list, but "diskette". I changed the boot order to "CD, DVD", "Hdd" then "USB" and the windows disk took off on the next boot up. I did as you said and now the screen says this:

Is it finished doing the repair and I need to type in "exit" or do I need to do something else? Also is the boot order I have it set at now OK or should "CD" be second with "internal HDD" first?

Entering "exit" did not work. It's still booting up the same way.
Also, on initial boot this screen pops up....

Does this mean there are two copies of XP on this computer. Like the last time it messed up someone just installed another copy along with the original one?
Choosing the first one gives me all the options above and choosing the second one just tells me "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware."

Hey virge (and vag. lol ) From that last pic, by selecting F8 and then "last known good config" will that let you back in? Also, when you boot to cd it should give you a black screen with the option to reinstall a fresh copy (F10), but you will loose all your data, in which case you could use an app called Get Back NTFS.

Hey Bro!
Nah, using F8 and last known good config. doesn't worky. It tells me there is a corrupted or missing system config. file. If I go into set up with the disk it'll give me the choice to install or repair, but I'm trying to save all her stuff so I keep choosing repair. When I do it just goes into DOS and if I type in "help" it'll give me a lot of choices, but I don't know which one to choose. I'll definitely look up that APP though! Thanks! Judging by that last PIC it looks like someone alread installed a fresh copy over the last one...I guess?
Imma gonna see if I have any stroke at work and see if an IT guy will take a look at it for free today. It'll probably take 'em about 5 minutes to fix....

There are two "recovery" options... one does a reinstall of the base OS and the other drops you to a recovery console. (The recovery console is what you have pictured above.)
Get to the recovery console (the picture above with the C: prompt) and type "chkdsk /r /p" (without quotes). If it repairs any errors, run it again, until it comes back clean. If it reports uncorrectable errors, you are going to have to reformat and completely reinstall. Once done, reboot and see if you got lucky.' (It counts both up and down... don't freak out if it jumps from 65% done back to 51% done, etc)
You probably didn't get lucky. The next step is to do the other type of repair. (Whatever "r" you pressed to get to recovery console, skip, and use the other "r" instead). This will take you through a reinstall without a format. You will have to re-add any applications and updates, but data should not be lost. This usually fixes the problem. If it doesn't, then you need to do a complete system restore (including format).

Ah, just the advice I needed! Thank you!
I went over it with our IT guy and he told me to just reinstall and reformat, but I'm gonna try your method first if for nothing else to learn about this. IT guy says if this has happened more than once then the HDD is probably on it's way out.
How hard is it to replace a laptop's hardrive and will I be able to get a replacement for a 4 or 5 year old Dell or will it take an after market HDD?
Thanks for all the help!
