skin grafts and the nervous system
    #7750528 - 12/12/07 06:11 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

has anyone here ever gotten a skin graft for any reason?

I was wondering if you can still feel with the skin you had replaced? Does it link up with your already in place nervous system?

Just something i was thinking about today.

Never had a skin graft. But I do know that sensation begins to return to the graft, full-thickness better than split-thickness grafts. Generally regaining of sensation is not perfect but you can feel pain and major other feelings, touch, cold. Probably not very fine sensations though.

That's not exactly true though it was once held as dogma. Peripheral nerves grow back pretty well, CNS (brain and spinal cord) nerves don't with a few exceptions (hippocampus neurons depending on damage will regrow).
