yeah, i want to start off a company that evaluates peoples homes and then advises them on how to make their homes more energy efficient while saving them money.
basically insulating their houses, replacing their incandescents with cfl's, planting trees so that they block the sun in the summer and let it in in the winter. putting motion sensor lights in rarely used areas of the house. installing programmable thermostats, installing rain barrels for lawn watering, etc...
the nice thing is that with most of these modifications i can actually print out how much their bills currently are, and show them how much they will save if they make the modifications pretty accurately.
people only make the earth friendly choices when it saves them money...

In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption" "People do it every day, they talk to themselves ... they see themselves as they'd like to be, they don't have the courage you have, to just run with it."

Sounds like a good idea. I know my energy company does home evaluations and gives rebates for making energy saving improvements to your home. The government also gives people tax breaks when you buy every saving appliances and things for your house.

That sounds like an awesome idea. I am not just saying that either. I don't know how you would get it started though.
You'd have to take into account a lot of things to make a business out of it though. Do you have any backround in architecture? That would help i believe.

That does sound like a pretty good idea
Would you just be advising them on what to do, or would you actually be making the modifications yourself after the evaluation?

Sounds like a home-oriented version of the Rocky Mountain Institute. They do the same thing for businesses, though they help out homes as well. If you haven't already, I highly recommend reading Natural Capitalism by Paul Hawken, Amory Lovins, and L. Hunter Lovins. Make particular note of their section on "breaking through the cost barrier." I think you'll find it rather enlightening.
