Casing for Simple Minds
    #7750261 - 12/12/07 05:15 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

First we would need aluminium trays, commonly used to keep food. Also, rice, vermiculite or perlite, distilled water and polypropylene plastic, used to wrap the sandwich with mayonnaise.

First, we made the substrate, vermiculite and rice in a proportion of 4:1 in volume, and humidify this with a little bit of distilled water.

Then, we put this mix in the trays filling 1/3 of the height.

Add more distilled water until the rice its fully submerged in it. The we put a vermiculite layer, or perlite, similar to what we do in the Psilocybe Fanaticus Technique.
Also, this layer of vermiculite in to secure a uniform grow of the mycelium in the surface of the tray.

Now, we put the cover of polypropylene plastic, involving all the tray. I like to put two covers of the plastic, to do it more resistant to pressure and mechanic forces. Also, put to spot of a electric isolation tape, what would become the inoculation spots.

We put a sheet of paper between the trays and take them to the PC for one hour to 15 PSI, to sterilize the substrate and cock the rice. And then, we are ready for the inoculation.

And with a little of hope, and time, it would look like this:

After the colonization its done, I like to add a layer of Vermiculite to make new surface mycelium in order to star the casing, to do this, you can use any casing material (I used vermiculite) and put it over the tray. Thanks to Nibin, Mystique, RR and PokeSmot! I realized that is better to put a thrash bag to avoid side pinning. You can do this now, when the mycelium posses some resistance to contaminants, or fill the tray with casing material like this picture:

1 day after the casing:

I can see it works but why all that hassle?

First of all it is mixed grains and verm and then case. You would get higher yields with just plain grains cased.

Second, it seems quite fragile compared to solid glass and metal jars. Pick up one of those wrongly and flop, it lands all over the floor.

Even so, nice grow method.

You are right Nibin, maybe is not that strong like glass or metal, but is disposable and you have to be more gentle than with a cake.

And it would be useful to use as the inoculate layer in other casings.

Regards! Thanks.

Hey, you are the chilean from the Pub!!! Hi!

What do you do to stop the mycelium from eating away at the aluminium trays. Over here people generally use black trash bags, which also have the added advantage of protecting the sides and bottom from reflected light and so avoiding side pinning.

The side pining in the casings you mean?, and how can I put a thrash bag in the case?...

I don't like aluminum it will melt threw in the first flush and start side pings and what not. You should do what he says and atleast put in a layer of plastic.

The mycelium metabolites will dissolve holes in the bottom of aluminum trays, which encourages bottom pinning and contaminants. In addition, the reflective sides of the aluminum tray cause side pinning. I'd recommend plastic trays, or at least lining the aluminum with black plastic sheeting.

Slimz, no, that its my kimono for the tea ceremony.

RR, what I see there is organic material decomposed, not aluminium. Try to wash them up, and probably you can use those trays again. Also, the aluminium is used on food storage and it doesn't oxidate, not even the steam of the PC can cause damage in the trays.

And the trays are disposable

Poke smot, I agree with you, I also add a extra layer of vermiculite after the substrate is colonized.

I will upload some pictures of Trays with the extra vermiculite layer. Also the trash bag idea is really god.

Yeah, you're wrong. Mycelium regularly eats through aluminum trays. The holes left behind are proof enough.

Isn't it only certain strains of mycelium that eat through aluminum?

I do not know if the mycelium actually eats it but the acids put out by the mycelium will burn through it.
Tomatoes will burn through aluminium also

I think this is a nice tek, but i think it would be good to go into a little bit more detail , like how much water you used to hydrate the mix

Quote:

First, we made the substrate, vermiculite and rice in a proportion of 4:1 in volume, and humidify this with a little bit of distilled water.

I find this a little to vauge and many people could get it wrong. Are we mixing to feild capacity here or is it just enough water to moisten it????

Maybe "eats" is the wrong word. Holes form in aluminum as a result of being in contact with mycelium. Cubensis mycelium being one such offender.

It is the mycelium's digestive juices that dissolves the aluminium so it is technically eating.

Aluminum is not an organic material, but mycelium metabolites will dissolve it, as shown above. You can not wash and re-use an aluminum tray that has had holes eaten all the way through it.  Avoid mycelium being in contact with aluminum.

What about painting the bottoms of the trays with cheap dark colored latex paint? Never tried or thought about it until now... Anyone got a clue about that idea?
