spawning to coir - first time

this guy told me it is his first time casing and he will be spawning rye to coir/coffee, and casing with peat/verm/lime. he said he will be sterilizing the casing layer with a PC, and pasteurizing by soaking the coir AND coffee in a pillow case in a pot of hot (not boiling) water for an hour and a half. well he told me the coir is already fluffed up and not in brick form and was wondering if it makes any difference, and if his pasteurization method is acceptable and if he should mix anything else in with the coir/coffee to maximize it as a substrate. i know absolutely nothing, so i will ask you guys for much needed input. thanks and please spare me a nickel so i can buy some liquor.

10% gypsum by volume, for the sub. Also, don't sterilize the casing, pasteurize it as well. When you are pasteurizing, don't let the temp go over ~170-180 or you will begin to sterilize the sub. And ensure that the core holds the above temps for the 1 - 1 1/2 hrs... not just the water.

Your pasteurization method is fine. One mistake that a lot of people make with coir is not bringing it to field capacity. Wring out your pillow case of pasteurized coir until only a few drops come out.
Coir is pretty acidic and the coffee adds to this. Add some hydrated lime to help balance the Ph.
Some of the hydrated coir I have seen was made up of big chunks. I have never used prehydrated coir so I cant tell you whether it will work or not, but I don't see why it wouldn't.

should i add the hydrated lime and gypsum in before or after the pasteurization ? also, does anyone have any experience with this stuff:
could i use that instead of hydrated lime? also whats the best way to get the sub out of the pillowcase without making a mess or getting contams?
is pasteurizing the casing layer really necessary? since its non-nutritive shouldnt there be limited numbers of beneficial bacteria anyway? thanks for the replies guys, the idiot whos asking me all these questions hopefully will figure his shit out.

Dolemite Lime contains magnesium, which causes problems with fruit body production.

Put that shit in before pasteurizing. As far as that lime there, why not use it in your casing in the amounts used for hydro lime? I don't know a thing about dolomite lime. I wouldn't use it in the sub though, cause you're already changing the pH with the gypsum, and that might be bad news if you burn it.
How bad would it suck to lose all your bulks to contams? It sucks, but you should pasteurize the casings.
Edit: Apparently, Cooldude knows more than I do. I suck.

i was thinking of using the type that i bought from the hardware store , for walls wihipedia writes : A drywall panel is made of a paper liner wrapped around an inner core made primarily from gypsum plaster, the semi-hydrous form of calcium sulphate (CaSO4.½ H2O). The raw gypsum (mined or FGD) must be calcined before use. i don't know if calcined version can also be used in soil . if anyone knows tell us pls ??

I hate nosy people. I was buying rye berries yesterday, and the chick at the co-op kept asking me what they were for. Uh, none of your goddamn business? I just tell them I don't know... my girlfriend, or mom, or something needs them.
That hydrated lime shit can be hard to find. I don't know where you live, but here, it's cold as all fuck. Every nursery is closed, and I can't find it anywhere. As far as gypsum goes, I have read of people crushing drywall for gypsum. There's something about that in the forums somewhere.

Gypsum is for gardening. Just tell them you have a clay soil you need to loosen up. I think plaster of paris is ground gypsum, you can find it at most craft stores but you might want to check that it is indeed gypsum I could be wrong and there might be a alternate version that is not safe As for hydrated lime find a grocery store that sells canning supplies they usually have it, albeit some only carry it in season. The mom thing is often the best answer they send us to pick up all kinds of strange things. One last thing some have used oyster shell used for chicken feed for a calcium buffer in casing and substrate and this can be found at any feed store. Do a search here and you will find teks that use it. Trout

Gardening depts. and nursery's .....
For gypsum .... use drywall .... crush it up and discard the paper.

nice, thanks for all the replies.. i was also wondering if it is agreed that the casing layer should be pasteurized.. im just thinking of how messy its going to be getting all that stuff out of a pillow case..

Two Links.
Go pick up a paint strainer. Use it instead of a pillow case. Might not be so messy.
