Eleven people were arrested Monday for unrelated counts of delivering drugs in the city of Whitewater, including a mother and son, and seven UW-Whitewater students.

The arrests stemmed from a four-month long investigation conducted by the Whitewater Police Department, University Police, Walworth County Sheriff's Department and the Walworth County Drug Unit.

The authorities had search warrants for 257 N. Prairie St. and 215 E. Clay St. Apt. 47. Three vehicles were seized. The 11 individuals were arrested in various locations throughout the city, including the UW-Whitewater campus, Police Chief James Coan said.

"We hope these arrests convey a message that trafficking of illegal drugs is not tolerated in Whitewater," Coan said.

The Walworth Court District Attorney will review allegations of Ian Helfenstein, 21, delivery of marijuana; Philip Wester, 22, delivery of marijuana; Andrew Nostro, 22, two counts of delivery of marijuana, possession with intent to deliver marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia; Andrew Freeman, 20, two counts of delivery of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a park and two counts delivery of psilocybin mushrooms within 1,000 feet of a park; Kaleb DeVries, 23, two counts of delivery of marijuana and probation apprehension request; David Hanizeski, 21, three counts of delivery of marijuana; Jordan Shimon, 20, three counts of delivery of marijuana; Daniel Adams, 19, three counts of delivery of a schedule IV drug and two counts of bail jumping; Kent Collier, 21, two counts of delivery of marijuana; Daniel Bowers, 18, two counts of delivery of prescription drugs and delivery of schedule two drugs, and his mother, Diana Bowers, 45, delivery of prescription.

Stefanie Schafer lives in the Clay Street apartment, which was searched for the second time Monday. She said she and boyfriend, Helfenstein, were sleeping when the authorities arrived.

"We got woken up at 9:30 a.m. by loud pounding on our doors," Schafer said. "The cops came in and arrested my boyfriend. They took him away and then said they were taking his car."

She said authorities hit the door with a sledgehammer before she woke up to open the door.

"Our door is completely demolished," Schafer said. "They put a huge hole in it %u2026 I did go and unlock the door for them."

University Police Chief Matt Kiederlen said officers are required by law to pound on the door with their hand for 20-30 seconds while vocally informing residents of a search warrant.

"The department acted very reasonably," he said. "There is a concern in this type of situation with people fleeing or attempting to get a weapon. All those things come into play."

Kiederlen said for an arrest to be made in relation to delivery of illegal drugs, a suspect must be caught making a sale.

"I think it's safe to assume some sort of basic undercover operation took place," he said. "A transaction had to have happened."
