Can I take the jars out to check on them?

Hey! I currently have a small incubation setup, one big tub thats temp regulated and a smaller tub with the jars thats sealed on top. Anyways, I was wondering if I could open up the top tub which hasnt been opened since I put the jars in there and pick up the jars to check on the colonization without risking too much contamination. I don't want to pick up my 12 jars to check on them and have them get contaminated after all that haha any responses are greatly appreciated! Thanks much!!!!!

Its fine to look at them. The dry verm layer is your filter and if you have micropore tape over the inoc holes your doubly safe.

You can look at your jars all you wish. My book shelf has been my incubator that last few years.
Your jar will be contaminated no matter how much you look or don't look at it if your inoculation and jar prep were off. Most jars are contaminated from the start- its just a race that we hope the myc wins.

I've read that light doesn't necessarily hurt the process. The darkness is meant to avoid pinning too early, but it would be a waste to wait 2 weeks and find out it's all been in vein!!

I keep trying to tell people that, but when someone pops up with invitro pinning in there jars, the first conclusion is light.
Taking your jars out is not going to risk contaminating them. When i first started i would be checking them everyday handling them etc. On my recent grow i accidentlyu knocked one of the jars over and it has not contaminated.
The verm is your filter, it is possible to take the lid off put it back on and it wont contaminate. The dry verm is there to catch any spores that might get in. Because there are no nuitrients or moisture, any spores cant germinate and grow. This is also why you should wash the dry verm layer off when birthing.

If a jar pins before 100% surface colonisation in a jar it is because the mycelium cannot colonize the missing parts, be it because of a contam, because of excess water or other reasons.
So essentially, the mycelium has colonized 100% of it's available substrate and "decides" it its time to pin.

yes... i have dropped an open jar WITHOUT a verm layer (full brown rice jar) and it fell out om the floor. i picked it up, rinsed it underwater, and put it in the jar without any problems.

IF YOUR WORRIED ABOUT CONTAMINATION, WHICH YOU SHOULD BE! THEN TAKE SOME EXTRA PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES, LIKE THE FOLLOWING: 1. PUT ON A DUST MASK 2. WASH YOUR HANDS 3. PUT ON LATEX GLOVES 4. APPLY RUBBING ALCOHOL TO YOUR GLOVED HANDS 5. SPRITZ THE AIR ABOVE & AROUND YOUR INCUBATION CHAMBER WITH PURE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE 6. OPEN, EVALUATE, CLOSE

I dont have to worry about that sort of thing, i step threw a clean room before entering the house. Everything entering and exiting gets a thorough decontamination.
My whole air system is hepa filtere too!!

No normal, lived in house, is clean by mycological/sterility standards.
It's hard enough to keep an operating room clean, and they are covered in tiles (no bare walls, carpets, or anything).
The only way to have 100% clean air is using HEPA filters, but by using a still air box we avoid the problems caused by moving dirty air.
Also, unless you live in a filthy place with rotting stuff the spore and bacteria count of air is really really low. The problem is touching stuff. Sterilize a needle and let air touch it for a day and it will still have less contams on it than if you put it down on a table or touch it with your bare hands.
