60/40 straw to hpoo. Do you think coffee grounds, oyster shell flour, or gypsum should be added?

Isn't Oyster shell flour and gypsum used for the same purpose?

I wouldn't waste your time with coffee grounds. Gypsum is a must have in any compost or bulk substrate. I would recommend 10% gypsum to the total volume of your finished substrate product. Oyster shell flour is another wasted ingredient when you're using gypsum.

So if a different type of bulk is used, using gypsum instead of oyster flour would be OK?

Gypsum and oyster shell flour are used for two totally different purposes. Gypsum supplies calcium and sulfur, both necessary for fruit formation. As a side benefit, gypsum helps prevent swings in pH, either up or down. In other words, it tends to keep the pH stable, right where you set it with lime. Every form of bulk substrate can benefit from the addition of gypsum.

Oyster shell flour, powdered limestone, calcium carbonate, and hydrated lime can all be used to raise the pH to the desired level.

The more substrate ingredients you mix together, the better performance will be. A balanced diet will work better than any single food source. Coffee, coir, straw, manure, compost, worm castings, etc., are all good by themselves, but mixed they're even better.

OK well RR I am planning on spawning to coir/coffee should anything be added into this? I am then planning on casing with 50/50+ Tek which is where i get confused. I have hydrated lime to help raise the PH. I am still looking for gypsum. Is gypsum the only thing else to add into the casing mix?

Add gypsum at up to ten percent of the bulk substrate, or the peat in the casing mix. Add lime to the casing to raise the pH to around 8 or so. You don't need to lime the substrate, only the casing.

Gypsum is always recommended as an ingredient for bulk substrates. Not only does gypsum aid in preventing drastic changes in pH levels, the calcium and sulfur content give an added benefit of nutrients which mycelium love. Gypsum also aids the substrate in moisture retention by flocculating compacted ingredients, as you can see this is a critical component in a bulk substrate.

Oyster shell flour is best reserved for casing mixes in my experience.

Sorry about that. I was replying when RR was. This topic has already gotten away from what I was commenting on, so I'll let RR take it from here.

Should I add gypsum to both the substrate and then the casing mixture? Sorry for the repetition here but I am just confused with the 50/50+ and I want to use it. So I will only need to add hydrated lime and gypsum to balance the PH. They are the only two products that are needed to be added? Also, in order to test PH where would I be able to purchase litmus paper? Sorry again for all the questions.
