Merry effin' Christmas - Subbs in December in SE Texas.

It has been hot. REALLY hot. Above 80F several days in a row. It has been mild on the days it hasn't been hot, and it cooled down for one night after a big rain. Then the next day and night were warm and muggy.
Today, I drove through the ritzy 'hood behind me and rounded a corner to see this...

Picked about 1/3 to half of those, then drove around to my normal hunting spots, and picked about half of what I found there.

Some of these are foes, I think. Most are subbs though. I'll print 'em all of course.

Nice habitat shot. Does anyone ever ask what you're doing on their lawn?

nobody asks what I'm doing on their lawn, since they're usually not home when I visit. If they did, I would explain that I'm collecting mushrooms for a research project about the sizes of the fungal organism and need to collect all the mushrooms of one species in an area to test their DNA to see if they are growing from the same organism.
I would then ask if it's okay if I continue, or if they want me to stop.
If they say stop, I'll stop.
As far as places to look, I'd say every lawn you can find. I've found subbs in old neighborhoods, new neighborhoods, doesn't really matter it seems... as long as the grass is healthy. YMMV.
I need to grind up all my subbs into a homogenous powder and pill 'em up. I have so many dried ones, I'll never eat 'em all, and I find them all the time, so I can just eat fresh if I want to.

good call, nice weather out there sometime we get around 80 but at night is almost 50 f and few rain but was not successful to find ,sometimes subb appear out of season, normally that range from jun-July. and trough all season if new grass is sow, or in new lands camped areas, but no luck so far , i have never eat dry subb i wonder how much potency dismisses , i love them fresh , now i´m getting the idea that don´t matter how much you ate but the experience. panaeolus are orgiastic, and real fun never seem a bird eat one?, fly and go , i have see it many times too think is just coincident all this type of mushrooms are call here little birds and all the time i think it had some other relations but when i see the bird i understand,....or maybe was not a bird but a spirit. i believe in spirits..
all my best vibration, the spirit eat mi cactus

My point about them growing in nice neighborhoods is that they grow on healthy, usually fertilized, grass, and rich folks have a tendency to keep their grass healthier than in other neighborhoods. There are laways exceptions both way, but if you want to go lawn to lawn, check out the new homes and new landscaping.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, CC... I was just saying how I have found them in very old neighborhoods as well, and as long as the grass is nice and healthy, they'll show up. Well, that, and somewhere the spores will get to.
Of course, in the old neighborhoods I've seen them in, people probably use horse manure as fertilizer, but I can't be 100 percent sure about that.
Oh, and I drove by again today.... hundreds in that lawn. I can't get any more... I want to so bad, but I can't justify being seen in someone's yard two days in a row. Too bad I don't know anyone else who would want to risk picking that yard clean...

nice find, but i have a question.
After reading a couple guides only about subbs, i thought i could identify them easily. The pics you have up there don't look like any subbs i've ever seen before. What characteristics do you look for when hunting for subbs? It just surprised me because all the pics i saw in field guides had that typical undulating cap and slight bluing at the base of the stem.

its funny because thats actually one of the guides that i've read. I guess what threw me off was that in the pictures in this thread, the caps of the mushrooms looked almost perfect, and in the guide there were curves and waves on the cap (zonates?). I need to get used to identifying them.

the zonate caps are typically what I look for, but I don't rely on it. They fade to a solid color soon after picking, and if the weather is dry and windy, they won't be zonate when you pick them. If they are older, they usually will start to dry and crack, so they won't be zonate either.
but when I go looking, that's what I look for first. I also pretty much know what's growing in the lawns where I'm looking are subbs, so unless something looks very un-subb, I usually pick without too much concern. I find subbs to be quite variable in appearance even within a patch. I find very grey to very red variations, planar caps and umbonate caps interspersed through the typical bell shaped caps and some get wavy, some blue on the base, most don't. I tend to find those that do are usually very faint.

Once you have established that you've found a patch of them, you'll start to be able to ID them pretty easily. I can almost pick out foes by sight, but usually once I pick them I know if it's a subb or not.
