Stamets or Chilton are experienced experts that will always be good reference for whatever you are looking for. However, consider trying to find a local mycological group and some experienced people. You cannot learn enough by reading alone to be adequately safe. There is much to be said about experience when it comes to this field. Nothing like an Ol' Timer showing you the ropes and passing down some tradition. Good luck in your endeavors.

I picked up the National Audobon Society's Field Guide to North American Mushrooms and have been pleased with it. It has pictures and descriptions and shows which are edible, hallucinegetic, and poisonous. I picked it up at Crown Books for about 15 dollars. Hope this helps.
