Dear god, oh no
    #7745404 - 12/11/07 03:01 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

The parents of a County Durham schoolboy, who choked to death on a plastic pen top, are stepping up their campaign to get them banned.

Ben Stirland, 13, from Consett, died in January, after swallowing the pen top while doing homework. His parents vowed to get the tops banned after they said one acted "like a fish hook" when it became lodged in the teenager's throat.
A charity ball on Saturday aims to highlight their campaign. The youngster's school, Moorside Community Technology College, banned plastic pen tops after the tragedy. But his parents, Nathalie and David Hodgson, want a wider ban.
'Biggest concern'

They have organised a charity ball to highlight their campaign and to raise cash for Newcastle General Hospital, where Ben was treated for two days before he died. Mrs Hodgson, 38, said: "Ben was very outgoing and popular at school and just loved having a laugh.
"What Ben was doing that day, chewing his pen, is what thousands of people do every day.
"Our initial and main aim is to get the pen lids banned". "Our biggest concern is that the safety air hole and the clip, which you clip on to your jumper, acted almost like a fish hook and was difficult to remove from his throat." Since Ben's death the family have approached various organizations, including the British Standards Institute and the Writing Instruments Association, in an effort to persuade manufacturers to stop producing pens with removable plastic tops.

What you all think about that?
It's sad, yet stupid, but come on. Banning removable tops, or pens with removable tops.

It was an accident, all right. But come on.

I don't know what to think.

Discuss.

What are you talking about?
Never blame the parents for bad eduation!

Blame the products that warn that children under 4 should not use because they could suffocate with the pieces of the product itslelf.

Yeah lets ban the fucking pen tops. Fucking pen tops, why didn't somebody think of banning the pieces of shit sooner?

Because theres no way this kid could have also choked to death on a fucking piece of chewing gum, a lego, or any of the other millions of small objects that exist in our daily lives.

I think people choke to death on steak sometimes, it should be obvious what must be done.

People have been known to drown in water before. I think it's high time something was done about this scourge!

These parents are dicks. I hope they cross the street, and get hit by a truck.

But then the grandparents of the kid that died will try to ban trucks, and crosswalks.

I hate when every single child's death equals some kind of mission or charity or cause that the parents feel they must make in order to honor the child.

It happens every time.

banning pen tops? but then wont the kids be running around with sharp, pointy objects? thats much better... i think the parents should go a step further to insure the safety of our precious children. ban all pens, and pencils for the matter. but then what would we write with?

personally, i think its a conspiracy presented by the evil crayola corporation and stock held with said company by the parents. but what do i know?

It's because child mortality is so much lower now than it used to be.

Read a history covering the 1850s or so, everyone had siblings that died, children that died. It's the same kind of thing that makes casualties in war so much less acceptable. It used to be, sometimes kids die, it sucks it happens, soldiers die, it sucks, it happens.

I wonder how much our various art seems to imply that there's a reason for everything, heroes, villains, cause, effect. Half hour tv shows where everything gets wrapped up tidily might affect people's thinking more than they realize.

EDIT:

People's fears are sometimes so stupid. Gun vs. Swimming Pool. Swimming pool is hundreds of times more likely to kill the child, but what are people afraid of?

that's because a swimming pool is much less likely to be used as a tool of violent crime. never heard of someone being car-jacked or mugged at swimming-pool-point.
