lots of side pinning and bottom pinning

i have a 6 qrt bulk grow going on right now and it has alot of side pinning and pinning on the bottom. when i first put this in my fc i used foil to wrap around the sides and bottom to help prevent this, and someone told me that that can cause side pinning from the reflections. so i took that off and put duct tape around the container.
i checked it today and their are alot of pins on the side and a bunch of small ones on the bottom. is this just bound to happen?
can i take this out of its container and fruit it like that?
i dont have the duct tape on the bottom just on the sides. what do you guys think i should do?
thanks much

Next time, line the tub or container with a black bin bag.
This time, just let it grow. Also, maybe the side pinning is caused by a less than ideal humidity...
What are you using to provide humidity?

its a pmp... i just calibrated my hygrometer yesterday and its at 97% in the fc.
would it be possible to take the bulk sub out of the tray and fruit it like that? would it dry out?

Side pinning can happen when a substrate shrinks away from the side of the container. Not much you can really do but keep the substrate moist. As for excessive side and bottom pinning, it would indicate that light is getting through your container. I fruited some cubes once out of a halloween candy bowl that was purple, and I ended up with the bulk of the harvest being on the bottom and sides.

so are the pins on the bottom of the bulk a lost cause? how will they ever find their way out from the bottom?

if you can reach them then pick them but if not then?? They will rot but your casing will be spent before they cause any problems

thats a bummer cause there are alot of them. i will defiently have to line it next time.
so taking it out of the container is not an option? i suppose it would dry out to fast if i did that.

When I used to get bottom pinning due to the same problem as you (before I tried trashbags) most of the time the bottom pins would eventually find there way out and become monsters with a huge stem that went all along the bottom, over the sides and up into the air.
After each flush I'd lift the substrate carefully and pick any pins that hadn't grown and a couple of mushrooms that didn't grow big enough to make it to the sides.

when you say a bin bag do you mean what we call a garbage bag? i was also wondering if i couldn't fill in the side gap with moist verm to prevent side pinning. might that work?

garbage bag, trash bag, bin bag, rubbish bag. Whatever you want.
You don't want verm under your substrate, it's a bad idea ( do a quick search if you want to know exactly why, something to do with drying the substrate out i think.)

You can also take the substrate out of the tray and lay it on a wire rack, so all sides can fruit in the open. As it starts to dry, simply pour water on top. RR

this would work perfect because the bulk is above the top of the hydroton at least 2-3" sitting on a piece of rabbit fence held up be 3 pieces of pvc going length wise through the fc. thanks guys
