which grain substrate is for me?

i'm fairly new at this, although i've been doing me homework. I tried my hand at the BRF cakes, and the results so far are less than impressive for me. I want to give it another go, but i was thinking of stepping up to a grain substrate and casing. wild bird seed seems to be a popular one, but theres also mention of popcorn, cracked corn, straight millet, etc. can someone help by outlining the advantages one has over another? colonization speed, yield, contaminations, etc.
also, a coffee/coir mix or a 50/50+ for the casing? i have found TONS of great information on here, but i still dont understand the advantages one method holds over another.

I prefer WBS the grains are a lot smaller then popcorn or rye so when you spawn colonization is faster.
Coffee coir mixes are used for substrates which yield more then straight casings but also take longer.
Also WBS in my experience is much easier to find.

Not coffee coir for casing. Coffee coir mix is a bulk substrate as it is nutritious, yo want something non nutritious like peat.

Rye berries rock. They are easy to prep, but can, supposedly be difficult to find. Rye seed is different, and more suited for different species.

wow, you guys are awesome. thanks for the input! my next attempt will officially be this: golden teacher spawned on WBS (unless i can find rye seed easily), with a 50/50+ casing in a baking dish. my set up is still pretty simple, a rubbermaid fruiting chamber with pearlite humidity, and a low watt flouresent bulb in a clip light on a timer.
now i just need to find a pressure cooker!

update: after shelving the project for a couple months, i'm finially getting ready to have a go. reason for this post: to share that organic rye berries are very easy to find online. the shipping aint cheap, but its still not too bad.
http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/organic_grains.htm or just google it, theres several companies that specialize in organic whole grains and such.
and i'm stepping up to an automated humididy and air exchange setup, about ready to buy a tropic-aire thingie with an aquarium pump. together it will be 30 or 40 bucks, but hell i've already spent about a hundred on all this other crap so i might as well do this shit right so i have something to show for it.
thanks again guys for the advice.
