To me, it is mostly about getting to know the character of the members, by paying attention to the quality of their posts. Some people stick out as often posting ignorant bullshit. Some people stick out as often posting something worthwhile. Some people don't stick out.
On the other hand, I do tend to look at post count, but mainly in conjunction with how long they've been a member.
If I see that someone has 1,000 posts and has been here for a few years, I consider that they probably have a history of making relevant posts when they had something to contribute.
When I see that someone has 2,000 posts and they've been a member for 3 months, I assume that they probably type so much bullshit their keyboard must be stained brown.
Agreed. Some people want so badly to be a part of the community that they really, really try. And they do this by getting 2000 posts over the course of a few weeks. It's just not the way to get 'respect' here. Respect comes from well articulated, educational, and/or intelligent humor over an amount of time. Among other things.

Post count means nothing. I've been around far too long to know this. Registration dates, OTOH, can really affect my perception. It kind of sucks that old skoolers create newer accounts.
Just to clarify what I meant in the first statement; I know some great shroomerites who've been around for nearly a decade with <300 posts who, when they do post, have extremely insightful things to add to discussion and who are practically always around... something evident by how quickly they will respond to PMs. Also, I, personally, have what is in today's shroomery universe a fairly low post count for my tenure yet I have participated in a great deal of post whoring and OTD discussion and yet have maintained very long periods of inactivity in which I would not even logon for months. Also, i engage in very sporadic periods where I add quality discussion for a couple days at a time.
Post count means nothing... unless it is dramatically high in relation to the registration date. Even then, it is no sure indicator of the poster's quality of posts.

It depends, you can goto OTD and the pub see that post count means jack shit. Reg date is a bit different, usually people that are new have less to contribute, but this isn't always the case. Sometimes people come here from other forums, and might have been posting on bluelight or opiophile and might come here for whatever reason. This isn't all that common though, as it sucks to start over to prove yourself.

That is generally true, in all regards.
A lot of the newer members do seem under-informed, and a lot of them come off (to me) sounding like they're kids.
On the other hand, there are exceptions. When I became a member, I had been lurking here very regularly for a couple years, and I had been involved in the "drug subculture" for over a decade.

There are a lot of people with over 10,000 posts that don't seem to know jack shit. Obviously not everyone, but most people that seem to know what they are talking about have between 2,000-7,000 posts. Also, you can look at post states and tell a lot about someone.

Some people talk a lot, but actually have nothing to say.
