Cost of Getting Started

I know that there are people here that want to get started growing but are on a low budget because they are 18, live at home, mc donalds doesnt pay much, pot cost too much, blah, blah blah. So I was thinking about how much it would cost to get started wth the pf tech with just the basics. The only upgrade that I have added is the presssure cooker instead of boiling the cakes for an hour. The pc pays for its self the first time you use it.
Pc 60-200$ Get the all american 921. (these got exspensive, I only paid 150 for mine 10 years ago.
Spores syringe 20$
Vermiculite 7$
Brown ride flour 5$
jars 10$
Rubbermaid tub 10
Spray bottle 5$
If you buy this stuff and follow the mmgg to the t. This mean you do not read a bunch of post about h202, light cycles, rh gauges, and other confusing stuff. You just follow the mmgg and you will produce enough fruits and piece of mind that will outway the intial cost of the supplies.
You can do it this way and learn all about mycology.

You can get a small Presto PC to start out with for about $50 or less (that's what I started with.)
You'll want some perlite in there for humidification.

I use a mono tube so there is no reason for it with mine save on cost and finding it.

a spray bottle will work just fine. I am talking about the mmgg. When these noos start messing with perlite, rh gauges, tits, marthas, lighting.
My very first grow i knocked up 1 jar and once colonized i put the cake in a 1 gallon pickle jar and misted once a day and got about 5 dried grams. Just basic. These noobs need to get the basics down first.

i would want gaurenteed success. having a newbie try to grow on horse poo, agar, and all that is asking a lot. Most of these people cant even mix up the casing or flour and verm properly

You are quite right and I don't really understand it.
I have made dozens of pf cakes without a pressure cooker, inoculating without a glovebox, and have never had a single contamination until a cake has produced 4 or 5 flushes. All of this by following pf tek instructions to the T.
After a while I moved on to bulk, but still enjoy making cakes once in a while.
Then you get people who on their first grow add new substrates the the cake, dunk it in bleach and peroxide, change the ratios because they think it will be better (when they have never grown a thing before) and they wonder why it all went wrong.
Little steps people, little steps.

Haha, I agree. I'm only on my first grow myself, but my costs were as follows:
Jars-$7 Brown Rice-$3 coffee grinder(to make flour)-$20 tub-$7 Verm-$7 Perlite-$6 for 2 good size bags Spores-free
So, $50 all in all, not too bad. I have 8 cakes in the fruiting chamber right now, and enough materials to easily cover another 1-2 batches. The only problem is I need to get more jars. I miscalculated the taper on these, and ended up having to smash the jars to liberate the cakes. Oh well, only $7 more. At least now I'll have some spare jar lids to set the jars on when I sterilize them.

Anything I post is purely theoretical, and not based in reality. All pictures are from google. A big part of me has died inside and I don't know if it will ever come back. Nothing makes me happy anymore. I use drugs and alcohol to numb the pain, and my sense of humor to hide the rest. I don't share these feelings with anyone in real life.

first grow i tried was a ms lc to wbs - spawned to a mix of (pasteurized) horse/cow and sheep manure. naturally composted straw and verm making up ~40 % of the mix. cased with verm alone, couldn't find peat / hydrated lime or ph test papers. now using a verm / ph balanced peat based seed potting soil with added gypsum mix for the casing. casings were fruited sat on a heated seedling propagator, on a timer, only time iv'e had a grow fruit above 70f, filled with damp perlite with an upturned clear tub over the tray. guess i was lucky the ms lc wasn't contaminated. little steps or...read and...hope you all have as much good luck on your grows

We should have a contest for who can do it the cheapest. of course you cant use supplies you already have should do it like grams per dollar.

I probably could have done it myself first time too (and quite a few other members here too), labwork and sterility are my field of work, and I had grown edibles a long time ago. But it doesn't hurt to go slowly. It gets you used to seeing how things should be and when you move on to more complex procedures you can foresee problems better.
A big percentage of the nOObs here have no previous experience with sterility (or even cooking) or other techniques which are important in the hobby, but so many arrive saying "I want to make the biggest badass grow out there and I am going to mix this tek and this other tek and I'll inoculate it without flaming because I don't have a bic lighter and I'll birth the jars early coz I want to trip with my friends next week and then I'll change my mind, cover it in peroxide spawn it and mist with bleach. Then I will connect 6 humidifiers to the set up, incubate at 110ยบ for faster colonization and pick the pins earlier because aborts are stronger"
Then they wonder why it didn't work and give up after spending a small fortune.
I am pretty sure that if they had done a small pf tek grow and read a bit more they would have got a lot more results and have spent a lot less money.

My first grow was completely free. I had a compost pile made from grass clippings I picked up in the rich neighboorhoods on Sunday afternoons. The gardeners cut the grass, rake it up, bag it up, and put out by the street, ready for my pickup truck to come along and get them.
I then picked up a fruiting cow patty from a field, and mixed it around the edges of the compost pile. Result: Free mushrooms. RR

yeah but this is too easy and basic for these noobs. They would still screw it up
