the only light besides the sun that i have heard dose anything is black light because it emits uv rays it is said to make it more likely your shrooms will be mutants.

Depends on the temperature of the light of the leds

Leds dont get hot enough to matter, lights arent big enough of a deal to debate.
some people use timers, some use uv, led, candlelight and campfires... maybe even the beams from the moon broken down with a prism to give you pure purple light... idk.. i personal dont worry about lights.

Yes, many people have used LEDs in the blue or white spectrums and gotten decent results.
If you're going to use LEDs, you'll want to use MANY of the brightest variety you can find.

Not the temperature of the actual bulb the temperature of the light, 6000-6500k range is the ideal.

i have seen them grow in the dark with only minutes of very pale and indirect sunlight a day (opening the cabinet door to check them). used to see it all the time. imo it would be a waste money

I'll disagree that lighting doesn't matter.
A decently bright light source that runs 12/12 will give a good pinset. They WILL fruit with no light, but that doesn't mean light is not important for the best possible yields.

You can't argue that light makes a big difference with growers that are happy with crappy pinsets. However, if you want the best pinset and growth you can get, then use bright light with a color temperature of 5,000 Kelvin to 7500 Kelvin.
Of course, there's other parameters that are just as important, if not more important than light. Failure to pay attention to ALL the pinning triggers is like trying to win the Indy 500 with a clogged up air filter or dirty spark plugs. RR

I have one of these guys: http://www.smarthome.com/97314T.html
And even though it's got the most LEDs I've seen in one unit, it's not very bright. I know, I know, the mushies don't absorb energy from the light, but I mean this light is so dim compared to even a 10 Watt CFL that I decided to just a get an 18 inch flourescent glow light from Walmart for like $10 or $20.
One of these days I'll compare the LED to the flourescent and post the results. But unless you have a couple of those LED bulbs, I'm not sure they give off enough lumens to be very effective.
edit: however the color output is nice, maybe ~6.5K

well like ive always said if its worth doing, do it right. so im gonna research this more, i honestly didnt realize it was indeed a major pinning trigger, i musta overlooked it in past.
noted thou now.

Anyone know the cheapest way to get from AC to DC? I was thinking the cheapest would be to just buy one of those AC/DC converters at Radioshack? Any better solutions? I want to stay away from battery power.
EDIT: How many of these do you think would be sufficient? The angle is 30* and the brightness is 1900 - 5500 millicandelas.
I figure I can configure them series of 3 off of a 12V power supply and only waste ~50mW for every 3 added.

Just sort of an inquery, because right now I'm just using indirect sunlight, but as I was reading this thread, I looked down and realized my computers had pretty bright blue LEDs on them. Do you guys think these would be strong enough?

Currently, LED's with enough intensity to work well are many times the price of fluorescent. In additon, you don't want blue light, LED or otherwise. You want high frequency light, which is sometimes referred to as 'blue', but the light still looks white.
Search the terms 'color temperature' 'Kelvin' 'fluorescent' using my username. I've typed this answer out many times, so it's all there in detail. RR

I have used old computer power supplies to run fans and stirring devices. I believe thats what you want.

even thou Ive recently realized the importance of lights, Im gonna avoid LEDs. Like RR said they are to expensive atm. so Im not sure if you still wanna go that path.

Wall warts are the least expensive solution... Radio Shack overcharges for them, though. It might be worth ordering one online from Digi-Key, Jameco or Mouser (might even try eBay.)
If all you need is to go from 120V AC to ~160V DC, you can get a bridge rectifier and convert it straight to DC, but chances are you'll want to step down the voltage first.

Buddha, those 18 inch grow lights are only like 3700k, i looked into it cuz i had some from a while ago
a proper 6500k compact flourescent cost me 8 bucks for 2 of em at mall-wart

You could always series like 75-80 2V LEDs w/ that voltage... Not that I would try such a thing
Awesome idea seg_x, that completely went under the radar for some reason. I actually have an extra power supply on hand.
