Build it yourself. It's not rocket science, and will cost you half of what you'd pay. You can use the money you save and buy a pressure cooker for optimum sterilization of jars.

Most if not all materials you need to get going can be bought at your local Home Depot or Walmart. The cost of making the equipment yourself will give you more capital to buy all the necessary supplies to be successful. I'd suggest building a glovebox and buying a PC at the least to up your odds of success in addition to reading/researching all you can before jumping into the hobby.

I was going to buy a kit until I just built my own set up, FC and incubator even my own glove box and guess what? everything plus materials etc has cost about one tenth if than If I bought one of those expensive kits online and it works wonderful, and thats all I care about.
Just build your own shit, you'll get some pride into your project too.

I had my first experience with a growing kit. With 20 euros (30 dollars) I’ve got 140g of mushrooms (3 flashes). However You need a terrarium or a greenhouse (made by yourself too) because plastic bags are not good (generally you can find a plastic bag with an air filter in each growing kit). I had my first flash inside the plastic bag but my mushrooms were growing very low and after some days they were going to die because growing space and air exchange were not good. A friend of mine obtained 450g of mushrooms from a single growing kit! Sorry for my English!

I bought the Myco101 Starter Kit from Mushbox, everything seems to be going good so far. I'll post pics after I get my first flush.
Here's the link: Myco101 Starter Kit
Can't go wrong with Mushbox and Spores101 man.

Wet weight. But I'm talking about a little box like this at first experience of grow:
http://www.ganja.co.uk/cannabis-seeds/mushroom-kits/
Expert cultivator can obtain 1 to 2kg of wet mushrooms from a single kit.

I've seen people grow 1kg wet on kits like these or similar ones.
They contained about a quart of cased grains.

This "Kit" Works Wonders
Even with a small 12qt version, the results are excellent with minimal effort.

Grow kits from vendors can be good for some if you don't want to have to purchase a pressure cooker or spend the countless hours researching recipes and trial and error. Our kits are guaranteed to work and ready to go as they arrive on your doorstep.
but hey - to each his own.

As you say, they are great if you just want to grow shrooms as a one off thing and are not interested in how the stuff grows and works.
But if you are interested in the whole process, pf tek is cheap to do and nearly foolproof.
If kits exist it is because there is a market for it, and if it wasn't for people like you those who want a kit would not be able to buy one.
