How about a wick system in a brf cake?
    #7743358 - 12/10/07 11:48 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I remember there is a trick you can do with potted plants where you take a length of 1/4 - 1/2" synthetic rope that will soak up water from a reservoir underneath making a 'wick' system that continually pulls water into the pot. Well, what if when you made brf jars you placed such a wick in the center with a little slack that when birthed and placed in the FC you can put a tray of water underneath that the wick touches and draws water up into the cake continually.

That wick will be a breeding ground for contams.

If you want to add a bit of extra moisture to a cake sit in on a saucer of water for a day and it will wick the water up from there.

You don't want a steady state of moisture content, or we would just set the cakes right on the perlite. You want the substrate to lose moisture, because the loss of moisture is a major pinning trigger. Then when needed, you soak the substrate to replace the lost moisture and repeat the process.
