Simple Spawn Question
    #7742946 - 12/10/07 09:52 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I was reading a the spawn to coir tek by oatman and I have a quick question. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6004845#6004845

In the tek he mixes one qt of "spawn" with half a brick of coir. Spawn is defined as "Culture of mycelium on grain, sawdust, etc., used to inoculate the final substrate, or bulk."

My question is do you inoculate the jar and allow the Mycelium to complete colonize the jar or do you just inoculate and then mix with your bulk substrate?

Looking at the tek, the picture of the jar doesn't seem to be colonized completely (or at all) by the mycelium yet, but there wasn't any specific information.

Thanks for any insight.

Spawn is any fully colonized substrate that you mix with more uncolonized substrate with the intention of increasing your final amount of colonized substrate .

Commonly it is grains, but it can be anything.

You need the mycelium to completely colonize the grain before mixing with your choice of bulk substrate.

Thanks for clearing that up. The picture didn't appear to be fully colonized.
