Pedro question, let it grow?
    #7742666 - 12/10/07 08:48 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

So after a struggle my pedro is doing very well. I see new growth almost every week, in fact it amazes me how fast it is growing. I live in FL and it is starting to get pretty cold. I have been told to take my cactus inside and starve it of light and water so it wont grow and stretch. If I do this can I still expect to get 10"+ of growth a year? If so I have no worry, if not I might grow it inside. I will post pictures because I am so proud of its growth.

if it is not below freezing, leave it outside to go dormant, don't bring it in until you let the cactus itself get to around 30F, or it WILL etoliate...

I live in central texas and leave my san pedro cacti outside year around, we have about a week out of every winter where it gets below freezing.

peace

light isnt an important factor in forcing a cactus into dormancy, u can make a cactus go dormant in light conditions.
its water and heat that need to be witheld.

SUPRA, you leave your cacti out all year round? I was wanting to plant some bigger pedros directly in the ground but have heard from many people that the cold weather would kill them (I also live in north/central TX). It very rarely stays below freezing from more than 12 hours at a time, but does, on occasion, freeze for a couple of days straight. What are your thoughts on leaving them out? Are the roots or the flesh more prone to "freezing"? Sorry if I am hijacking a thread.

well, if you plant in the ground, the flesh will definitely be more prone to freezing, as the ground here rarely ever freezes, not enough cold times. The only time I bring mine in, and not even into air conditioned room, but my garage, is when it will be below 30 degrees for longer than overnight. In the end, they probably spend about one week inside of a garage, where it is 4 or 5 degrees warmer than outside....

I've recently planted one directly in the ground out at my friends ranch, about 9 months ago actually, we will see how it does over the winter being neglected, only checked on it once in that time, its growing good.

peace

The roots should be warmer in the ground when dealing with brief stints of cold weather because the ground will not heat up as quickly as dirt in a pot due to the ground being a larger mass. The disadvantage is that you cannot move the plant in the ground if real cold weather is predicted. I had one p. torch that I forgot to take in this fall. Luckily I noticed it in the corner on my deck. I'm pretty sure it faced freezing temps at night and it was as if nothing happened.

Clemens. I def want to see those pics. I was just down in Florida. It was about 85 degrees. I'm thinking you're golden with leaving them outside. I'm pretty sure I've seen pachanois in the ground in Orlando. I wasn;t close enough to get a sure ID...but either way it says something about whether you can leave it out or..even more whether you can plant it in the ground.

they are GOLDEN in the ground here. the only time i would worry is when they are young and just setting up in the ground, cover them with a blanket if its going to get freezing for more than 1 night. i have never seen a cactus killed by cold in south/central florida. i think the most our florida "winters" will do to a cactus is toughen it up. and in pedros case, that means more "candy"

not to mention, with all of this global warming and changing weather patterns, it may not even freeze at all this year or ever again in florida lol.
