HELP WITH RYE!!

Ok, so I've had successful grows with cakes before and have moved on to rye. Problem is, I can't get anything to grow AT ALL. No signs of myc or even contams. The rye is noticeably bigger so I think there is moisture inside. It doesn't stick together so I think the outside is dry enough. Can the rye enlarge and still be too dry? I've tried my own LC in two jars and purchased spores in my other two jars too see if a bad LC could be the problem. Still nothing. I have quart jars with tyvek on top of the lid and under the band. The lids do have holes about the size of a penny in them, maybe too much air flow? It's been almost two weeks and nothing. Temps are in the 80's occasionally going a little below 80 and rarely above 86. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Your holes are WAY too big. 1/4" holes are plenty. Your substrate is probably drying out.

Your temps are reaching the excessive mark. Try not to get your temperature above 80. They will even colonize fine at room temperature. The high temps are also contributing to your substrate drying out.

Sounds like its a bit to warm and your loseing water.
It can take up to two weeks to see growth with grains directly from multispore. Your LC might not have been applied strong enough-
Along side your grain grow you should have a "control" to even know if your spores are viable. Cook up some new LC or PF jars and colonize those also.
Stuff those huge holes with some polyfill- cause they sound way to large.
Give it some time. It sounds like your grains are prepped right.

Thanks for the timely replies. I've been letting my LC colonize longer and am going to give it a second try with smaller holes and not using a heating blanket for warmth (anyone else try this?) Another question: I let a friend use my PC and it damn near exploded. The bottom is swollen out and not flat any more. Is there any other way to sterelize grain without PCing or other good teks that don't call for PC besides BRF cakes?

Rye jars should have no more than four 1/8" or smaller holes in the lid, along with a filter. A penny sized hole will dry out your grains.
You'll need a new pressure cooker, as you can't do grains without one, and don't even think of using the damaged PC. Get a AA this time instead of made in china junk from xxx-mart, and don't let it boil dry. RR
