Hey y'all, I enjoy techno but can't find any more good techno out there. If you could name some artists that'd be great. PeaCe

Its hard to find good techno, but I know a good way to find it.. what you should do is listen to free streaming radio, like www.shoutcast.com . they have a lot of good techno stations, just flip through and you will come across a lot of good music. You can find a lot of good artists this way

really depends what you like...
plenty of decent mixes by popular dj's
look up homelands, essential mix (radio one) etc..
oakenfold (gotta get his china mix, and home @space, creamfields, etc.. my favorites) tiesto (any of his essential mixes are decent and in search of sunrise) armin van buuren (the states of trance and essential mix 9-2-03 should be easy to find and the esssential mix is awesome!) paul van dyk (energy 2003 is fucking AWESOME) ministry of sound (chillout mixes are tight)
i got lots more if you want.. although i dont really listen to much of this stuff anymore.. here's a little mini-set i've made for you:
dj icey - searching (joshua ryan remix) above and beyond vs andy moor - air for life [airwave remix] oceanlab - satellite [above and beyond remix] oceanlab - clear blue water
most of that is vocal trance, but that's what i used to be into.. no more mdma (at least i cant find any) so i dont listen to techno anymore.
but really there is so much more trance i could show you.. so much good stuff out there..
i would give you more but honestly i gotta get back to studying for statistics..
one more thing!!
DO WHAT I DID!!

well why dont you add something constructive instead of criticizing..
techno is such a fucking broad term i think every artist that everyone said is techno.
most of what i listen to (or used to) is either trance or electronic dance music.
or psy/goa if i'm feeling some infected mushroom or somecrazy blastbeat/experimental then i'll go with some aphex.

I usually like Aphex Twin, Chemical Brothers, Infected Mushroom... I'd say RJD2 and Diplo as well but I'm not sure if those last two technically count as techno.
Oh and Lemon Jelly is pretty good but it gets repetitive. Their '64 - '95 DVD is fucking sweet if you have a good chemical buzz though.

Everyone here with the exception of Ghost and TurntableJunky are fucking nitwits.
Hardstyle blows.
Good DnB is hard to find.
Only classic trance, and by that I mean the stuff that was made before it was even known as "trance", and some goa/psy are good.
Hardcore blows. If you need to call your music "hardcore," then you deserve to be maimed.
House has some really awesome shit, mainly just the early tracks and of course, those Ed Banger niggas.
Downtempo is just fucking dope, except the more pretentious subgenres. Go fuck yourselves, new-age beatniks and woo-woos.
The only genre that is still pure and what people should think of when they hear "electronic music" is techno. No, real techno. Souless music, but it more than makes up for it in its' purity. Each subgenre of techno kicks major ass, be it Detroit, acid, gloom (Horrorist), or minimal.
In any case, this is the way we make techno: low, low, low, low.

I can be an elitist asshole too, but when it all comes down to it listen to what you like to hear. EDM for the most part is all simplistic music that depends entirely on riffs and samples, so just save your bullshit for someone that cares.

It doesn't really matter. Most people who are in the music for the music and not because they're trying to be a pretentious "LULz I no musix betar than u" prick don't give a shit what it's called. They enjoy what they enjoy.
It's a general term for electronic music. Think of it as slang.
Technically there's no such genre as "indie" but that gets thrown around all the time too.

Hey, saw this thread yesterday, Im ressurecting it cause I need a suggestion for a heavy acid/drum n bass artist/s to get.
It needs to be something that will make a chick want to take her clothes off and fuck until she passes out, I'm talking about some seriously horny shit.
hook it up
I already have two tracks by benassi... guess them and I'll give you a 5 star rating.

im guessing one of the tracks from benassi is satisfaction. Dunno about the other.
Ugh, this thread makes my head hurt, it's a huge pet peeve of mine when people cram all types of EDM under the label "techno". Maybe its from spending about 15 years in the dance scene, i dunno, but techno is a form/genre of dance music and is not a general label for dance music.
Anyways, i can't believe that throughout this whole thread no one has mentioned richie hawtin/plastikman. Sheet one is ESSENTIAL if you're a techno fan. Whoever listed kevnin saunderson as a hard house dj needs to have his head checked, christ he was part of the bellevue trio one of the FOUNDING FATHERS of the us techno scene! I also don't know why people think tiesto, sasha, digweed, oakenfold, are all good djs who play good music when they all play crap and most of the times couldn't mix kool aid while reading directions. Good trance music died in 99.
Anyways, if you're looking for techno artists/dj's i have a few for you to check out.
Plastikman/richie hawtin derrick may the advent sean o neil underscore_omega jamie morris Frankie Bones Adam X Heather Heart John Acquaviva Juan Atikins Dave Clark Chris Liebing Adam Beyer Jeff Mills Laurent Garnier
Enjoy

no, there is a huge difference in the trance music from the mid to late 90's (where in the late 90's the goddamn anthem trance killed the genre for me). There's a huge difference in music quality when you listen to crap ass cookie cutter trance music put out by ferry corstein compared to some union jack.
There is good trance music, and there is crap trance, i still stand by what i said. Good trance died in 99.

With the exception of vega, columbia, and avenue that album was utter shite. Politics of dancing sucked, PVD's production went from fucking awesome (think seven ways) to crap (think tell me why). I'll give a slight nod to we are alive, but after it got overplayed i lost a lot of love for the track. Believe me i used to be a huuuuuge PVD fan. However once he became mega popular he stopped caring. His dj sets got sloppy, his production became cheezy and cookie cutter, and frankly he got fucking boring as hell.
I listen to a lot of house now and will always have love for dnb (hard to grow up in philly's scene without some love for dnb). Trance was what i used to spin along with atmo, but as the years grew on all the tracks sounded the same and it became nigh impossible to build a good mood with trance tracks since most of them were anthems. I still listen to some progressive, sander kleinenberg remains one of my fav dj's to this day, but for the most part give me some house music

at a quick listen id say melodic progressive, it's hard to tell without knowing the BPM of the music. It's definitely a genre/subgenre of trance tho, and im putting it in the prog category because it feels to be around 125-128 bpm, nice and slow and plodding.

You really think so? 'Another Way' and 'Love From Above' are bangin. I do like Vega a lot though, it was cool to hear PvD do some breaks.

Ah, yah, another way is a good track for sure. I did look over that one. I dunno, im really jaded and cynical now when it comes to PVD. He was one of my main inspirations when i was spinning trance and i really felt like he sold out and stopped caring. Pretty disappointing if you ask me, i remember going to a club 4 hrs ahead of opening to make sure i was able to get in to see him play. Now you'd have to pay me a huge sum of money to even consider going out to one of his shows.

he's famous for the same reason people like brittany spears and jessica simpson are famous. Image, marketing, and hype. Then you get the kids who don't know shit about good dance music, couldn't tell a train wreck from a perfectly phrased mix, support the crap out of him because that's what everyone else is doing.
Last time tiesto came to philly he played at transit, 60% of the party went downstairs to watch mass play when tiesto came on.

What makes me fucking angry is Tiesto rips off of everyone else's shit to the point where people think he produced the song. Like ayla, everyone's all 'oh I love that song by Tiesto' ayla ayla. Bullshit that was Tandu and that was one of the greatest trance projects ever, so beautiful.
Anyone like the ayla project: Nirwana, Ayla Part II, Angelfalls,Liebe, etc.?

I'm going to guess that you don't listen to much trance anymore. There are 1000's of producers all over europe making different shit, how can you make a blanket statement like that? I understand if you don't like anthem trance, as its pretty gay even if I do like it, but the trance you speak of from the mid 90's was pretty much just as gay. All the big tracks in the 90's where leading up to anthem trance anyway, it progressed its not like it did a 180. Also, its spelled Ferry Corsten.

as much as i hate to admit this, and really i fucking can't stand this guy, system f's out of the blue does hold a special place in my heart. However that's only because of the memories associated with it. Also thanks to john shah i also have a digweed track (and several remixes) that i really do like, heaven scent is probably the only the thing he's done that i truly enjoy. Even so it's still pretty cheesy, but when you put it in the right spot during your set it's just fucking magical.
Yah, i know what i said is a pretty blanket statement, and honestly there is still trance out there right now that i would listen to. It's just that majority of tracks being played are garbage, nothing moves me like it used to, so i just moved on. I still buy the occasional progressive records and when i throw roll parties at my place ill whip out my old trance records and spin for hours. It's a really cool feeling playing a track you've heard 38298290 times in clubs to people who are hearing them for the first time. I always dig their reactions, it really makes me miss my old dancing/dj crew back east. Since i moved to an area that has no local scene i spend no time dancing or listening to music on the weekends.

Enjoy

Do you think trance will ever make a huge comeback? I wasn't really old enough to take part in the scene in it's glory days (98,99). It's still going strong in parts of the world, but it's not quite as big as it once was.
I hope it does.

it's been dead in philly for a long time that's for sure. I think shampoo and transit are the only big clubs in town for dance music now. RIP space. However there is a healthy underground scene and bar scene in the city. Plenty of warehouse parties to go to, im just never in town when they go off.

You seem to know quite a lot regarding music. Have you made any mixes of your own? I tend to like the fast upbeat techno/trance/whetever it's called. I don't know what it's called, but I like it when I hear it, haha.

You seem to know quite a lot regarding music. Have you made any mixes of your own? I tend to like the fast upbeat techno/trance/whetever it's called. I don't know what it's called, but I like it when I hear it, haha.
i've made a few mixes to get gigs before, nothing spectacular, just showing the promoters i could beat match and mix which is all they asked for. I never liked recording, im too anal about my mixes so i never end up happy with them. Sometimes all it takes is a slightly off phrase mix, or the bass kick doubles for a second cuz i slipped off beat for a few seconds, but i always find something i don't like about it and trash the recording.
I much prefer playing small house parties and gatherings, ill play out in philly with my friends if i bring records, but im not really interested in being more then a bedroom dj since i have other things i want to focus my time on. Playing gigs at bars and clubs as great and all, but nothing beats rocking out a small house party with all your good friends there.

Wow it's nice to know that half the DJs listed are actually Trance DJs and the others spin House.
Another Epic fail Dance Music Thread!!!

Yeah I've heard that about him as well. Had a friend who told me at a show he went to in atlanta he got kicked out for doing fat lines off the record he was spinning while a camera was on him. He was scratching a snorting at the same time, then security booted him out. I don't really care, I don't go watch DJs live. That is a good cd though IMO, and I'm not really in to techno.

Aphex twin is without a doubt the best. With a single song he beats the fuck out of all the other electronic that I have ever heard. Richard david james has help the throne since day one.

Almost none of the music being posted is techno, with the exception of Richie Hawtin (who I am seeing in Ibiza on Thursday at Space :P).
For some fucking killer techno check out UMEK.
