CIA Tapes Destroyed

What do you think the real motivation is for the CIA interrogation tapes being destroyed?
The official claim is that the tapes were destroyed to protect the identities of the officers conducting the interrogations. This doesn't make much sense since tapes can be easily manipulated to black out faces and alter voices.
It seems the CIA is covering up its actions for a different reason... any theories?

instead of risking the truth getting out, all materials subject to public records will be destroyed or lost.

Yeah, 'the truth' was destroyed with the tapes. I just wounder what that may be.
I mean they already admitted to water boarding, I just wounder how far they actually go, it must be worse than that. Damn it this makes the US look bad . How do they expect the rest of the world to back us if we don't take the high road?

Not so much worse than was the case already. It's not as if this was the only thing that does.

this was done to spare the families of the tortured. we are a compassionate people and we did not want the wives and childrens of these poor men to have to see the torture being carried out. (sic) this is a great example of compassionate conservatism at its best.
god blesses america.

I believe the official statement is true:
"The official claim is that the tapes were destroyed to protect the identities of the officers conducting the interrogations..."
What they left off, is "... from prosecution of war crimes."

Yeah I just found out that water boarding is specifically listed under US law as being illegal. It is also a blatant violation of the Geneva Convention.
Also, I found out that we prosecuted Japan in WWII for war crimes because they water boarded some of our guys.
But the investigators identities still could have been protected using digital masks.
After considering this issue it seems likely to me that they will never release the tapes (I think they still exist somewhere in the CIA). The reason they won't is because if the public were to see these methods of torture being implemented there would be a huge shift (even more than has already occurred) in attitude against this administration and the war in general. This would most likely force an end to the war, and this is not something they were willing to let happen.

I haven't heard that waterboarding is against "the law," could you provide a link?
But yeah, the official version is most likely true; why risk it getting out to the public? Video is far more powerful than abstract policy discussion.

It would surprise me as well; many people in the US military (and other agencies) go through a waterboarding session as part of their training.
Edit: In my mind, torture is something that a normal person would avoid at almost any cost. In my mind, waterboarding does not rise to this level. However, I do not approve of the use of waterboarding, or any other related techniques, for use in interrogations by the US. As a society, we should be setting a positive example, not blurring the lines between what is and what is not torture.

Well I heard it on Countdown on MSNBC so no link is available. It could have been a mistake or I may have heard it wrong
They also mentioned on the show that some members of the CIA had been water boarded in training. The guy said he only lasted like 10 seconds when it was done on him. It must be pretty bad if a CIA agent only lasted 10 seconds! I have felt some pain in my life but cant think of any of it that would make me tap in 10 seconds. The terrorist being questioned broke in less than a minute. I've never seen water boarding done but I would be inclined to classify it as torture given this information.
Like Seuss said though, this is secondary as any of these measures are out of line whether or not they carry the label of 'torture'.

Are you referring to the Bush administration, CIA or America?

In this case, the CIA. But those terms can be applied to both bush admin and CIA equally.
