Software Firewalls - pissing me off

I've been trying countless software firewalls and they have all been giving me shit.
Outpost - Worked great for a while, then started freezing my internet connection and locking up my pc
Kerio - Good firewall. But slows my internet browsing speed down by about half, and refuses to work with utorrent (I've tried setting up port forwarding and everything)
Comodo - I get a blue screen of death whenever I install it and boot back up.. cmdguard.sys error.
Zonealarm - sucks
Sygate - Pretty confusing and slows my connection down
So what's the deal here? I'm considering just not even wasting my time with a firewall period.. I am going through a router but I'm not sure if the hardware firewall is set up by default? Don't really know anything about that.
I just want a freaking firewall that does its job, uses minimal resources and isn't a pain in the ass to set up and work with my programs. I'm not a guru by any means so I don't want to have to read 30 pages of tech support and go through some elaborate port forwarding crap just to be able to download torrents or browse the web at NORMAL speeds or have my system be slowed down significantly. What a pain in the ass. I liked in outpost where you can set it up for "learning mode" for a week or so and it asks you anytime something wants access and you can just create a rule for it there. Something like that would be nice.

ps. besides the firewall (which I dont think does much of anything anyway).. I'm pretty well protected I think..
Running: Avast!, WinPatrol, Spybot Resident, SpywareGuard, and a Sandbox as my primary means of active defense.
Is a software firewall even worth my time and if so what is something that is lightweight and unobtrusive?

Oh also... if anyone knows of a good free backup program that works like System Restore... hook a brother up.
For some reason System Restore got corrupted on my XP disc and doesnt work period.. and looks like you can't download it from anywhere.

Don't bother with software firewalls.
You can always use MS Backup, it's decent.

I really dislike the term "software firewall" as a firewall is suppose to prevent packets from reaching your machine (among other tasks). A "software firewall" is not a firewall at all as it filters packets after they have reached your machine. In all most all cases, a "software firewall" is a port blocker, and nothing more. They offer very little security while tricking the user into thinking that the computer is safe from any sort of network attack.

That's the term he used, I agree with you.
