Man on life support after mushroom meal December 10, 2007 - ekathimerini.com
A Cretan man was on a life support machine in the hospital yesterday while six others needed emergency medical treatment after eating poisonous mushrooms.
The seven residents of the village of Mochos near Iraklion were admitted to the hospital on Saturday after eating the mushrooms, which had been picked by the 60-year-old man who is now in a critical condition.
Doctors said that the man, who was not named, had suffered liver and kidney failure and had been placed in the intensive-care unit. The lives of the six other locals were not considered to be in danger and they are due to be discharged from the hospital.
Authorities did not say exactly what type of mushroom the villagers had eaten. Two years ago, a 4-year-old Greek boy had to be flown to Italy for a liver transplant after eating a poisonous mushroom.

The man probably NOT looking for psilocybe shrooms. More likely he was getting edibles for his family or community, and he picked a batch of the wrong fungus.
Just because people eat the wrong mushroom, doesnt mean they were trying to trip or get fucked up. Lots of baltic, and northern region villages still eat wild mushrooms.

Man, we all know about the amatoxin timeline... you get sick, you get better, then you die. I hope these guys weren't discharged because they thought they were fine, only to have them suffer liver failure the following day...

I believe that statistic also. In the mushroom poisoning stories reported here in Shroomery News, when the mushroom is identified it is an Amanita (Amanita phalloides, Amanita bisporigera).
These, to many folks, can be confused with edible species.
Personally, I usually stick to the "Foolproof Four" when hunting to not take any chances.
