Bronco's Coach Mike Shanahan Fined for Questioning NFL Drug Policy December 8, 2007 - nationalpost.com
This past week, Bronco’s running back Travis Henry successfully sued the NFL to avoid a suspension for drug use. Coach Mike Shanahan, however, was not so lucky. The Super Bowl winning coach was fined $25,000 for public comments he made about Henry’s drug investigation.
Henry has maintained he is innocent of the charges, which lead to a one-year suspension, arguing there were technical errors in the NFL's testing procedure.
"I never smoked," he told the Denver Post. "I don't know how it came out the way it did... I don't know if they did something wrong with the testing or what."
Shanahan questioned the legitimacy of the charges in the first place and supported Henry's appeal, saying he was convinced of his innocence after the player passed a polygraph test and a hair sample come back negative for marijuana.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell felt Shanahan was making inappropriate comments about the league's substance abuse program outside of the appeals process.
According to USA Today, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote in an e-mail that Shanahan was fined by the commissioner for "inappropriate public comments about the substance abuse program in violation of league rules".
In a statement to the press, the NFL commented: "Travis Henry will remain in the substance abuse program, must continue to adhere to all aspects of it, but will not be suspended following his appeal."
Henry will finish out the remainder of the season with the Broncos.
Shanahan can appeal the fine.

False positives do happen unfortunately. It's good that Shanahan stands behing his team like that or he wouldn't have found out it was a false positive. The fine is bullshit.

Uh... why do we care if football players smoke cannabis? Granted, I don't really want my airline pilot, bus driver, or surgeon to be high while they are at work, but a football player? Who cares? Who is getting harmed?

Football is THE American sport next to baseball, therefore allowing the players to smoke weed will not only reflect negatively on the NFL and our country, but also surely "encourage" others (especially young kids who idolize these players) to start smoking weed which will surely lead to other hard drugs and ultimately result in the complete and utter collapse of our great industrialized nation.

WE don't. The NFL does. It's not like the US Government suspended Henry or anything. It's no different than if you got fired for failing a drug test at any piss ant department store, except in the NFL you don't get fired, just suspended and fined.

Ah... I thought perhaps they were confused, thinking cannabis was a performance enhancer (like steroids) or something.

While few will argue that marijuana contains no physical performance enhancement, many will argue that it doesn't depress a person's natural abilities after they come down. Henry's use is a prime example.

Remember you could smoke a blunt with the whole starting line up of the Trail Blazers in early 2000s I think.

In reality it makes a lot of sense. American football players, are usually portrayed as the big tough 'jocks' who drive the fast sports cars, date the cheerleaders, and would never sacrafise their promising future for some kind of substance abuse or inapropriate behaviour, and would certainly never admit it if they did.
However now a days American football, over 1/3rd of the player bases has an extensive criminal record. More often we hear how major league players are banned from their 'respective' teams for using steroids, or speed, or in rare cases cannabis. Or better yet are getting laid up on assault charges and DUI's because they feel they're talents seperate them from the rest of the world.
All the while taking home a fat pay cheque for doing dickall at the end of the day. sounds like the American game to me... FUCK FOOTBALL IN THE ASS WITH A BROKEN GLASS CONDOM.

why don't you go hang with fags in Quebec and go talk French if you don't like American football.
and quit posting stuff like " over 1/3rd of the player bases has an extensive criminal record" I'd like to see the source for something like that it's probably close to your asshole because that's where you pulled it out of. For the most part NFL players are excellent guys with incredible work ethic to stay in good enough shape to play, most of them are FULL time + workers. I've read the workout schedules of even Terrell Owens (who some may consider lazy - pushover) and I'm sure your lazy ass couldn't hang until 10AM with his routine. So saying they do dickall and get a fat check is bullshit, success is NOT GIVEN it is EARNED, something I can tell you know nothing about. For instance, at high school football level - most teams have practice before and after school and I even had weightlifting during my study hall, there is definately some DEDICATION and HARD WORK involved in football not just a bunch of 'born lucky motherfuckers' like you seem to think.

Ile assume you must know many professional football players to make the assumption that they are 'for the most part excellent guys'. Because to me that sounds like a pussy-fan boy crying 'you dont know them!'. As far as Terrel Owens is concerned I don't rightly care if he s got a rough schedule or has to work out for hours a day to maintain his physique, for the money hes payed, relative to the shit he has to actually do and the dangers he puts himself in. He would be a giant pussy to complain. Try underwater welding or working on an oil rig and then saying the NFL is full of hard workers.
And im very glad your 'success and hard work' in high school football payed off in the end. It clearly shows it.
and for the record. French-Canada sucks dick probably a little less than you yourself.

I live here in Colorado and they take the Broncos very seriously. I think few people here would agree with suspending him for using a drug that is not steroids, although I think in this case it is a false positive. 25,000 for opening your mouth about it and standing behind your players? thats ludicrous!
and why are athletes considered role models anyway?
