RR-questions about Cordyceps
    #7738946 - 12/10/07 12:53 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

since reading your post about this beautiful fungi i did a little reading.
from what i found on wiki (and its vague)
Cordyceps sinensis is a species of fungus found in southwest, mountainous China that attacks caterpillars, specifically the larvae of hepialid moths (identified as species of Hepialus or Thitarodes).

by vague i mean that it stats "specifically larvae of hepialid moths" then "identified as species of Hepialus or Thitarodes".

my questions are
would any larvae from the Hepialus or Thitarodes family do? (seems obvious but i thought id ask a pro)

you mentioned cricket agar in the post i read. would dried crickets or moths be a good substrate for this fungi? or would you need to infect live specimens of hepialus larvae with the fungus?

how climate specific is this fungi compared to others (lots have relatively forgiving temp and humidity tolerances).

given enough research into this genus is it likely that someone with a basic understanding of mycology and sterile technique (without a PhD) could grow these at home?

could spores be derived from a whole dry sample imported from china given sterile enough techniques and lots of agar work?

i am extremely interested in this fungi and not just because of the $value. just the unique way it seems to find its prey and the fact that it devours a living organism during its life cycle intrigues me to no end. i don't think ill rest till i see this fungus in action

Search Cordyceps on Google. You'll find a few good articles. There's little to no cultivation parameters though. I used live crickets to make the agar, and it's working OK. I keep them in the refrigerator at all times. Cordyceps mycelium will grow at just a couple of degrees above freezing.

You'll also find some good articles at John Hollidays site. www.alohamedicinals.com

The article "On the Trail of the Yak" is an excellent read, thanks for posting that link, RR.

John Holliday of Aloha Medicinals sent me a paper he did on harvesting spores from dried cordyceps.

First, wash the fruiting body under running water. Follow that up with a washing in 70% isopropyl alcohol. Next, place the fruit into a ten percent bleach solution for fifteen minutes. After the bleach, cut into 1mm disks and place on a non-nutrient agar, such as plain agar-agar and water. After germination, transfer and isolate in the traditional way. I have no results of my own to report, as I found a fresh, growing cordyceps and took the clone from that.

One would think the alcohol and bleach would kill the spores, but apparently cordyceps spores are some tough little buggars.

When you said bleach solution, you wanted to say sodium hypochlorite solution or hydrogen peroxide solution ?
I am trying to recover some mycelium from sun-dried Cordyceps militaris a friend of mine sent me from Portugal.Any advice ?

Sodium hypochlorite is bleach.  I don't use peroxide on any culture I want to survive.

Your best bet on the dry cordyceps is to attempt to germinate the spores.  Cordy spores can survive the bleach dunk, but most molds can't.

When say that bleach does not kill the spores are we talking about just Cordyceps sinensis or all Cordyceps species? I just want to be clear on this because I have 3 different fruitbodies and would like to attempt this at some point.
