My buddy ended up cutting open a tea bag and filling it with a tablespoon or so of desiccant crystals then throwing it in the jar. Thanks for the tips and comments,

Vacuum sealed bags sounds like a winner. But shoe boxes at like Walmart is the easiest way to get those desiccant bags, and they are usually pritty big (and clean). Just don't get caught trying to explain to someone why you need those...

No desiccants needed if you are absolutely sure you have bone dry fruit. Desiccants are insurance. Oxygen absorbers are nice if you plan on opening it often.:) What about the wine preserver spray will that work on shrooms as well? Trout

Nickster,
I second RR advice on vacuum packing.
Oxidization, light and heat are enemies of many psychoactive substances.
I dry mine really well, put them in a food saver bag, seal it (sucks all the air out), wrap the food saver bag in a piece of black plastic trash bag, store in the freezer.
No oxygen, no light, no heat.
I have some that have gone 5+ years this way ...... they come out of cold, dry, dark storage and kick your ass !
Good luck.

This seems like a good enough place to ask this question, so here goes. I'm storing my shrooms right now in an acrylic mason jar(the ones with the clasps like the ones pictured further up) with two coffee filters filled with damp rid and tied up so they don't spill powder anywhere. The jars are being kept in my refrigerator's crisper. Before this, I had been using the dessicants found in Aspirin bottles in a jar.
This worked fine for a while, but the latest batch I must not have air-dryed enough because when I looked at them a day after I had dropped them in, they had turned dark blue and felt kinda mushy. I freaked out, and constructed this new drying chamber and put them in. The problem is that some of these shrooms still have parts that feel a little soggy even though the rest is bone dry. There's no noticeable smell and they've been in the container for over a day now. Are these shrooms safe to eat or should I cut out the affected parts?

They are probably safe to eat IMO but when it turns that color it usually means that the psilocybin has mostly oxidized, and has become unusable. I would just cut those parts out because most likely they will just be nasty and wont do anything for you. I seriously doubt it will make you sick though. But, if you lost allot and feel like you really want to try it anyways, go for it.

I would recommend against eating them. If I read you correctly you used Damp-Rid in the last container. Damp-Rid is different than the silica gel in the aspirin bottles or any of the little packets for that matter. Damp-Rid absorbs the water and becomes a liquid itself it just pulls it away from anything else around it. Once it is liquefied it will then be absorbed into other things such as shrooms if not in a separate container . You do not want to eat Damp-Rid, I don't know what it actually is but I don't think it is safe to ingest. The silica gel packets are what you want to use in storage because they only absorb their capacity and then stop they do not liquefy, I would only use Damp-Rid for drying purposes and then it must be kept separate from the shrooms ie below a screen. For drying use Damp-Rid that you can get at Lowe's or Home Depot in the paint or cleaning isle. Make an airtight container and place the Damp-Rid in a separate container that is not sealed but wont leak/tip over or separate with a screen and the shrooms on top so they do not contact the crystals. You will be best served to air dry them first with a fan blowing over them and then finish them in the drying box. Then store them with a couple of desiccant packets that you find. You can make sure the packets are viable by baking in a low temp oven for a couple of hours. Trout

I used the fan and damprid method once and screwed up and bought a dehydrator and never looked back. Best $30 I ever spent. (except that time I bought 4 bottles of boone's farm, and a dime bag and lost my virginity later that night)

Dehydrators are great just don't use any heat(low setting). In reality they are just fans with a nice tray arrangement. A box fan with air filters set over it will work just the same. Very useful when you find the mother load of morels.;) Trout
