Quick question!

I was just wondering if the mycellium will completely take over the verm that i rolled my cake in. I'm kinda at a loss as to how to tell if my cake is done with its first flush and ready for another dunk and roll. here's what they look like: [image] [/image] Another question: is that a mutant or what? It's my 3rd acorn-looking shroomie so far in the first flush. Am I doing something wrong or is it genetic?

Eww, that cake doesn't look so hot. I would guess that the acorn looking mushies are due to a high co2 level. Do you fan them or have some other way of moving the air about? That will help i think. For me it's usually pretty easy to tell when they are ready to go to the second flush. If you have already had several mushies develop from that first flush i would think it's ready for number 2. Just run under some water and get the extra verm layer off then redunk and roll again later. These are just my novice suggestions. Hopefully someone will come on and either correct or confirm my suggestions as appropriate. good luck!

That acorn shaped is a mutant.
High CO2 will cause long spindly mushrooms.

Your cake should have stayed in the incubator for longer, it doesn't seem to have enough growth on it (myc growth). You want a good bit of the myc to take over the area you dunked and rolled. How long did you wait after you dunked and rolled it to place it in the FC?
* EDIT: or maybe you rolled the layer to thick, after dunkin and rolling you can keep your FC at a near incubator temp to resume the myc growth

Why would you leave it lying about? Dunk, roll, FC. I wouldn't put a wait in there anywhere. The verm is non-nutritious why would you want the myc to colonize or worry about contams landing on it?

same reason you incubate a casing.

The idea is that you want to have more growth then that, if your cold shocking it in the FC without decent myc, all you end up doing is prolonging the grow.
Im not saying that it should be reincubated, im saying its not ready to be fruited due to the thickness of the verm. layer.
an admin correct me if im wrong?

We never want the casing layer to colonize. The casing layer it there to provide a good microclimate for pinning, and it will do that if it colonizes or not.
In fact a few people have good results here with late casing, casing after pins have formed, and the casing does not colonize at all.

the acorn is wonderful looking! If it were mine I would clone that. I wonder if it would produce spores? You could have another "penis envy" on your hands. I have a morbid fascination with mutants and THAT my friend is the apple of my eye!:)

i just think you got a little over zealous on the rolling and mutants are usually caused by using too much oust/Lysol or spraying in the fc.
pick whats there, dunk, re-roll. lightly.
as for the casing layer, on the cakes you don't want it to colonize it at all and actually good luck getting it to colonize the 'roll' layer. in actual casings you want the myc to lightly break through the surface not colonize it. overlay is bad, but it is nothing to stress over either.
