Testing PH of casing: better safe than sorry? (Casing recipe is RR's)
    #7733716 - 12/08/07 03:29 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I have used RR's recipe for making casing material, following the instructions laid out on his Let's Grow Mushrooms! video (10 parts verm, 10 parts peat, 1 part gypsum, 1/4 part lime).

Should I test the PH before I case, just to be safe, or is the PH likely to be correct simply by following this recipe? There's no mention of PH testing (so far as I recall) in the video, but I have read that PH levels of peat moss will vary from brand to brand, etc. Since it's not brought up on the video, testing for PH doesn't seem necessary but....

I'd go out and grab some PH strips, but it's so cold and snowy here today that I'm avoiding walking to the hardware/gardening store to buy them.

Still, I'd rather play it safe.

Cheers!

That recipe will get you pretty darn close to pH 8, provided the 1/4 part is hydrated lime. If you have a good pH tester, by all means test what you have and adjust accordingly.

Thanks much for the reply -- I figured as such. And yes, I'm using hydrated lime. When it stops snowin', I'll grab some PH strips for future endeavors.

Cheers, RR.
