Drama Queens
    #7733219 - 12/08/07 01:18 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Just got my seeds today for my Drama Queen strain of Papaver Somniferum... I can't wait!

I'm not really sure how this particular strain ranks as far as potency goes, but I'm really growing them because they're beautiful, and getting nodded is just going to be a pleasant side effect

Yay!

Those are nice... here's a sample of what I grew this past summer. Supposed to be giganthemums but I obviously mislabeled the bag.

Very nice. My personal favorite is Persian Blue. They have beauty and potency.

Anyone know how the potency is on these? they said to expect heights anywhere from 30"-40"+ so it could be a decent yield....

they are good. the pod size is smaller then other varieties. however being raised for ornamentals they produce more pods and for a longer peroid of time. they are also more tolerant of heat, and stay shorter.

I recently acquired some seed that was supposed to be giganthemums but weren't. They look exactly like what you've got there. Weird

How and Why are you starting pods indoors? What geographical area are you in right now?

Generally starting pods indoors to eventually transplant outside does not work too well unless you can plant your whole flat. And an complete indoor crop is a disaster since most don't have the means for climate control and other factors. There's many other issues to consider as well.

well outside right now it's about 10 degrees with 3 feet of snow, and will probably stay that way until late May.

Still think I should grow outside?

I certainly don't, but I'm interested to see how exactly you plan on growing these indoors. They like LOTS of light, good undisturbed ground with soil that's got a healthy dose of sand in it. Every indoor grow attempt I've ever seen of poppies was an utter failure. Unless you have a built in greenhouse and plant directly into the ground I'm not quite sure what you plan on doing.

I realize that.

>>Ummm....grow it like pot?

Have you actually done that with poppies before? Because I'll lay down five bucks that the plants that germinate begin to fall over within 2 weeks of germination. Those that do live will be no larger than 7 - 14 inches, flower and create miniscule pods within another month.

You see poppies like a varying set of temperatures during their growth cycle. That's why I say that. When they're rosettes, either having been a dormant rosette through a milder winter or a new sprouted plant that is currently a rosette, less direct sun and milder temperatures are good. And just as with pot lignification of its stem is key, thus environmental wind stimulus would be helpful but is not totally necessary. As time progresses they do well with the change of temperature and daylight length. That's why those that plant too late or indoors end up with stunted tiny poppies.

Nope, my only experience with poppies is when they come up in the spring (self sowing in our meadow for who knows how many years) and then grow on their own. we give them water, but that's pretty much it.
Thanks for the pointers though. It doesn't really seem to me to be too complicated honestly, varying temps and wind stimulus could be pretty easy to simulate indoors, but what were you saying about them falling over?

its the same thing with MJ. Plants thicken their stems as a response to being bent over from the wind. So, if there is no wind source your plants stems will be weak and unable to support the top of the plant causing them to topple.

Really though this is an easy fix, an oscillating fan blowing gently on your plants will simulate the wind and help strengthen your stems. You can also go in and lightly shake and bend the stems to stimulate the growth.
