why is my internet so goddamn slow?

i pay nearly $50/month for roadrunner, yet i can't seem to watch youtube vides. granted, i've got some torrents going, but they're at a collective speed of 50kbps, so i really, really don't think that should be limiting my capabilities much.
i know the wireless router we've got is really old and faulty in that the wireless function no longer works. but do you think that could be limiting the net capabilities so severely? i know it's certainly not just my computer, my roommate complains of the same thing. the thing is, i don't want to spend upwards of $60 on a new wireless router if it's not going to really do anything. is there any way for me to tell?

you could see what kind of packet loss you are getting. If you are running windows Im not sure how to check that, but in linux just open a terminal and type ping yahoo.com Let it run for a bit then control c that bitch and see what the packet loss percentage is
Also check on dslreports to see what kind of speed you are getting

okay, so this is what i have to type into the command prompt

The quickest way to get information is hitting the following from the command line: pathping yourserver.com
Replace yourserver.com with the server to which you are having problems connecting.
but i'm not certain what "_________.com" i need to put in for my server.

well, im not sure about any pathping, but just type in yahoo.com and see what the packet loss is. Hell you might even just be able to open up a DOS prompt and type ping yahoo.com
As far as dsl reports goes, just check out the network speed testing thing they have there, I forget the name

That's probably your problem. It's not your downstream you should be worried about, it's your upstream. If you don't cap your upload rate, ACK packets will have a hard time getting through and everything will slow down. Limit your upload to 50% - 75% of your maximum, or invest in a good router with QoS controls.

well my collective upload rates were only at about 60kbps, which still isn't very much. i already had it capped at 400, but i just halved it to 200.
i'm really rather perplexed. i'm paying 50 bucks a month for cable internet, yet it seems slower than dial up at times. not cool.

Its definitely the uploading that is killing your speed. If you use a client with scheduling I suggest you set it up to 60-70 % max upload during the day and 100 % at night. That'll be fine unless you play video games online. I just pause everything while I'm playing.

60KB/s is in fact quite a lot; don't get confused about kilobits (Kb) and kilobytes (KB). Your internet speed is rated in kilobits, your BitTorrent client reports speeds in kilobytes. A kilobyte is 8 kilobits. It looks like RoadRunner has two tiers of service, one is 5Mb/384Kb, and one is 8Mb/512Kb. If you're getting 60KB uploads that's 480Kb, so you probably have the 512Kb service and you're just not reaching the rated maximum speed (this is not uncommon with cable). I would limit your BitTorrent client to 48KB upstream and see if it helps. You might need to drop it down even lower, to say 32KB.

For a 512kb up stream, a limit of ~48KB is correct for optimal torrent transfers. However, if you are doing anything else on the network, then you will want to drop that down even lower (32KB) to give your other stuff breathing room.
