Cantharellus cibarius look-alike?
    #7732866 - 12/08/07 11:40 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

(This is my first post in the Mushroom Hunting forum, please be nice. I didn't write a description because I'd just be describing Cantherellus cibarius. I'm not asking for an ID.)

Is there a poisonous look-alike to our tastly little chanterelle?

I had a great time in July with a more experienced hunter. We found, IDed, and consumed a few varities including chanterelle. I ate 3 or 4. Yum!

The following week, I found a large number of them, made my ID, cooked, and ate 8 or 9 of them. 6 or 8 hours later I woke up having an allergic reaction: sweating/freezing/hives...no fun.

Maybe I ate too many?
Maybe there is a look-alike?
Maybe the reaction was unrealted?
Maybe 350-400 ml of whiskey was a contributing factor?

Being far into the wilderness, I had no choice but to take benadryl despite the alcohol. The next day I had low energy. By the second day I felt fine.

During the following week, I heard flot of a few other cases of possilbe chanterelle poisoning here in CO.

There are some look-alikes, though in my opinion, it is a little hard to confuse them. There's omphalotus olearius, which is somewhat similar looking, but has true-gills, whereas cantharellus cibarius has ridges instead of gills. The textures of the fruitbodies are very different too. It is poisonous. There's also hygrophoropsis aurantiaca, which has ridges instead of gills, like cantharellus cibarius. However it is much different looking overall (more orange, and with scales on the cap surface). This shroom is poisonous to some.

I live in Mantana, which is similar to Colorado, except for its lack of girls. But I don't find too many look-alikes for cantharellus cibarius. My guess is that you found some omphalotus olearius and got mildly sick from that, or the chanties were rotten. I've never heard of reactions with alcohol, but anything is possible. Next time you find some (next summer/fall), post a picture on here to be identified. That way you'll know for sure wether or not you're picking chanterelles, and know what to pick in the future!!!

Oh yeah, gomphus floccosus. Durn curecat always eclipsing my knowledge. Off topic: Curecat, you ever tried gomphus floccosus?

The species listed above are the main ones you need to be concerned about.

Here in Colorado all 3 of the species CureCat listed have been found. On the other hand, the Omphalotus species are pretty scarce here, so it's unlikely you found them. They should be pretty obvious to identify, as they grow in groups from wood - the possible problem is specimens growing from buried wood.

False Chanterelles are pretty common here on Colorado. A couple years ago I actually found more False Chanterelles than real ones. I have always found them growing from wood here. They are typically very orange to brownish on the top of the cap. Another way to separate them is that they have no odor, where true Chanterelles have a strong, pleasant, fruity odor. Also, true Chanterelles typically have much thicker flesh than False Chanterelles.

Gomphus floccosus is not very common here, but it is occasionally found. It should have been obvious flavor wise, as it typically is somewhat sour flavored.

As landsnorkler mentioned, another possible issue is rotting specimens. Hopefully you're pretty picky about the mushrooms you intend to eat, but a bad one can slip in sometimes. One way to help minimize the potential for problems is to be sure you thoroughly cook you mushrooms. Lots of bacterial toxins can be destroyed by cooking.

There are other possible things that you might have encountered. The biggest problem is that "look-alike" is a pretty subjective term. I have led forays where some people clearly couldn't tell the difference between a Tricholoma and a Cortinarius.

Happy mushrooming!

On a recent foray organized to collect specimens for the MSSF Fungus Fair, a number of us were debating the identity of certain mushrooms, and someone said "They all just look like mushrooms to me!"

While hunting in the park today, we came across a number of "false Chanterelles". I will never really understand how people get these mixed in with their Chant collections. To me, they look NOTHING like Cantharellus. They have been growing from wood chips ever time I have found them.

Gomphus floccosus is the only one I can really understand getting confused with Chants.

A species I could see somebody mistaking for Chanterelles but that hasn't been named in this thread is Gerronema chrysophylla. They have the right general shape and color, they're just a bit smaller and grow from lichenized stumps.

If we really think about it there are probably a bunch of other mushrooms that can get mistaken for Chanterelles.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks a lot. That's some good stuff.

The ones I found certainly wern't Gomphus or Gerronema.
Maybe they were Omphalotus, but they didn't look like they had gills.
Maybe they were Hygrophoropsis, but they didn't have scales.

I'll look for burried wood next summer.
