Hi need help with identification: Found in pacific northwest during October, large fruiting colonies, under Douglas firs and in bark mulch, with some grass. Also found another large colony around the base of a dead stump, a little distance from the original colony. The Cap shapes were parabolic to Campanulate, with some appearing obtusely Conic. The Cap color was tan with a dark umbo? or nipple....hygrophanous. The gill attachment, I think, free, The gills themselves dark purple, The spore print purple black. They fell apart upon drying, melted really, deliquescent?...I literally poured this black inky looking stuff into a bowel as they dried. As far as the stems they were white and fibrous, no annular ring, and immediately upon touching them turned dark purple black to my eyes anyway. Fairly long and symmetrical. The Caps balanced on them a tad precariously if you know what I mean. Any ideas I would appreciate the feed back. Have a good one.

Coprinellus for sure, though I hesitate to ID this one to species, since so many Coprinellus look sooo damn similar.

Edit: because microscopic features distinguish most of the similar looking coprinellus, and C. micaceus is well recognized, i think it is fair in this instance to go with that species.

has anyone eaten C Micaceus? I've heard it can be a decent edible, (I'm aware it has to be prepared quickly).
Anyone ever try it?

No, that is Coprinopsis atramentaria, which contains coprine, disabling ones ability to metabolize ethanol. Coprinellus micaceus does not contain coprine.

As CureCat mentioned, there are several closely related Coprinellus species that can only be told apart with a microscope. Since C. micaceus is eaten by lots of people, it's reasonable to guess that the other species are also edible.
I've eaten C. micaceus (or one of the lookalikes, since I didn't use a microscope to ID them) several times. I think they do best if you use some garlic and cook them until they start to get a little crunchy. They don't have much flavor or texture by themselves. The only thing that puts them into the potentially useful edible category is that you so often find hundreds of them at a time. Be sure you use only the specimens that still have entirely white gills.

Hey thanks you guys are good! We are learning learning. They are most definitely the Coprinus Micaceus! I am delighted to start naming our collection. Once you all pointed us in the right direction thats it, thanks. The Coprinus Micaceus are described several places as having a terrestrial quality. They definitely had that going on when I first spotted them under this tree in the shade surrounding this old stump. Like a bunch of children giggling I remember thinking to myself. That Mushroom expert site great thanks, it described what I found to a tee. Perfect match. I salute you all.

As for the Gymnopilus Spectabilis? a couple of weeks ago, I think we got down to the taste test minus the microscopic examination of the spore print. We tasted it tonight. Very bitter.........Thanks again!

I went this year. It had a very commercial vibe, expensive tickets, lots of people outside looking for tickets. Once I got inside there were a ton of vendors selling things and a whole ton of bad music. Never heard so much in my life. There were like 20 sound systems, 19 of them playing really bad hippie crap. Not even good hippie crap. There was a live dub tent that was pretty cool though.
During the day, there were many thousands of hippies, all standing around doing nothing. Hippies can be cool when they move around and do stuff, but they were really bored, and buying lots of stuff from venders.
Shpongle played at night. It was a pain to get in, had to wait in a ton of lines to get my ticket validated or something stupid. I really prefer free parties.
The building shpongle played in was amazingly crowded. Really couldn't move at all. Great music and show though. The rabbit in the moon show was way overcrowded as well, but really excellent music and visuals.
Then the show ended at 2am and they turned the bright lights on and there were hundreds of dazed hippies who had just dropped expecting the party to go all night, and they all had to go and drive home. Made for some fun times on the road.

Wow. That's fucked up. No warning?? Jeeez.
I think that's kind of irresponsible of the even organizers. You'd have to be dumb not to foresee that sort of outcome.

Hm, I almost went to harmony this year.. almost meaning we did not get tickets in advance.
Other people I talked to about it said it was a good time.
