first go at coir/coffee & straw- nice results
    #7732069 - 12/08/07 06:36 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

These are my first coir/coffee spawns.

Here's a shot of one tub just after pining started:

Yield from the small coir tray: (large one is still going)

Here are the straw trays: (the two with mega overlay)

Yield from one of the straw trays:

Got to say I'm VERY pleased with my initial results. I think the coir/coffee mix is superior to straw, but the straw I used was pretty shoddy so I'll have to go a few more times to be sure. The fruits on the straw spawn were much larger by far, but the coir/coffee had many more, so the yield was much better.

With the two straw trays one had several layers, and the other only one. The one with several layers produced much more fruit.

I will be ravaging the coir/coffee tech from now on. beats the shit out of just casing rye, and is very clean and simple to deal with. Got to use the grinds asap though or they mold up real quick.

The only problem I'm having is with overlay. except with one coir tray, I've gotten complete overlay with everything I've done, and generally only incubate for three days. I've got a few other straw & coir's going that I didn't incubate at all, and they're doing well, no overlay.

Nice flush!  It's hard to believe it's actually been nearly four years since coir has been 'out of the closet'.  There was a mindset previously that coir had no 'nutes' and thus was a casing material, rather than a substrate.

I was flamed by the admin at another mushroom site for the heresy of claiming coir actually HAD nutrition, and was accused of being on a 'jihad' against coir casings. This is the exact reason I left that site for good. (of course, I was also on a 'jihad' against popcorn spawn)

Check it out-These are some of the earliest threads I could find on coir as a substrate using the shroomery search engine: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2247201#Post2247201

I agree. I stopped logging on to the site for a year. When I left coir was only used as a casing, and when I came back everyone was using it as a substrate and I was thinking WTF!!!!!!

How did you prepare the coir/coffee? What sort of mix did you use?

How much light are they (mushes) getting, what type of light, and your watering/FAE shedule? That would be cool if you could share some info. Thanks.

D4NK, I roughly followed Jeterred's Ghetto coir tech.  Just for the part about not needing to go too crazy on sterilization and that.  Used 4:1:1 coir:coffee:verm mix.  Cooked the mix in my PC with the weight off for 40 min, stuck it in the freezer to cool off, then did up my trays, sprinkled some aquarium powder ph up on top.

verminute, they're getting the indirect light in my apartment.  No watering.  I've got them in semi transparent plastic tubs with drilled holes stuffed with polyfil.  That idea is pure gold.  To be honest some of them I took the top off and fanned and some I didn't, can't tell any difference in the result, they were both good.  Got the bottom lined with either soaked perilite or clay balls.

Still trying to dial everything in, but very happy with the results using these 'polyfil hole tubs'.  No additional work or humidification needed.  I like not having to fill up a ultrasonic or humidifier every few days.  Just make sure no debris breaks off your cakes and falls to the bottom of the tub, or it will mold up.

MCM, good idea I will begin to do that!

here's the yield from my second coir tub! It was around one square foot surface area!

Hoo-rah, I think I'm going coir all the way from now on.

BTW my first ones were done with rice coir, not coconut coir, but now I've got a big bag of coco coir to use.

Oh yea and is there any best way to prepare for second & third flushes? Rest for a day, re-hydrate, patch casing layer, then start again?

When I let them rest/dry out I do that in a very dry place outside of the FC, is that correct? or should they do their recovery in the humid FC?

DO NOT LET YOUR CASINGS DRY OUT.  Always leave them in the humid environment, letting them dry out will cause the pinning surface to die and it will overlay.  Personally I just pick, patch, continue - although some people prefer to dunk.  I mist constantly though.

Straw is good for producing some monsters, but that's about it IMO.  It's usually a one-flush wonder and produces few fruits.  Some straw mixed in with coffee/coir can produce some nice flushes.

If you're going to keep doing coffee/coir, try supplementing the mix with composted chicken manure.  I've had excellent success with it.

Hmmph, what's the name of this method? I'm about to embark on my first grow, but I was planning on following the PF Tek method with the rice cakes and whatnot-- but this looks incredible.

Is there a write-up or a step-by-step process somewhere on how to grow in this way?

That is a monotub.

Bear in mind that it is a lot more complicated than PF cakes, requires a bigger initial investment, takes longer to get results, and there are a lot more steps where it can go wrong for noobs (and not so noobs).

On the other hand, the results are much bigger if done properly.

hey Sillicybin thanks for that blast of info! I will switch to your method from now on. It is more logical to me, and simpler too.

Chicken shit eh?! I just threw out two unopened bags of that shit because people here were saying that it's of no use in this hobby, as it's nitrogen or something is way too high. Obviously you've got results to back your method, I'll give it a try, how much do you add?? Oh yea and the stuff I can get it 'worked' so to say, as it comes in little pellets.

The best results of those trays was from that monotub. It was a thick substrate with only around 4 inches of clearence to the lid. I hardly ever opened it, and initially I was worried as there was almost no room for growth, but I guess because of the small space, and the high humidity that resulted, they grew like mad. Useful info that I will try to replicate on a larger scale..

jlw this is called the super duper lazy half ass tech. no i'm just kidding, actually i'm just trying out a bunch of different things to find out what works best for me. still MANY trials away from doing anything incredible.

chicken shit is useful as an additive in small amounts but is not suitable as a bulk substrate on it's own.

Nice grow, couple of questions.

  • What strain/s did you go with?
  • Did you case?
  • If you did with what?
  • Was the tub keeped in a room with lots of circulation or a closest?
