Perlite and Rice as an Experimental Substrate

I have searched the threads and the site but iIcant seem to find any regarding peoples thought processes on this. I found threads of people using it in a 50/50 mix with verm. and had good results. and used it in casings as well, I have read how it just evaporates water off rapidly and my thought is that it may work well for an inner reservoir, to help with moisture loss to stimulate pinning, but it may evaporate too much water too rapidly and just dry out the cakes. I am about to make up a new batch of jars, I do have all of the necessary supplies and a lot of extra perlite, I was just wondering what the Pro's and Con's of this might be, and seasoned cultivators thoughts as well. I might just give it a try and see what happens. Keeping everybody up to date of course.
Edit: I have decided to make up a dozen jars using a Rice and Perlite Substrate... Why? you might ask... Short Answer: To experiment. Long Answer: I seem to find a lot of threads for the use of SUBSTITUTING perlite for vermiculite.. This is not my idea here. I am using a whole rice tek, Using organic long grain brown rice, prepaired as per the Whole Rice TEK, but then addind almost 50% soaked Perlite to "fluff" the mixture. Not to retain moistire. I figure that also the perlite may regulate moisture content through out the cake... but i could be wrong.
If there are any new thoughts on this i would like to hear them. Its kind of a brainstorm for me and maybe you as well

Perlite is crystalline and does not absorb water, thus it would make a horrible moisture reservoir. Use vermiculite, which absorbs and holds water like a mineral sponge. RR

I have used vermiculite as a reservoir filler (when I was doing cakes and before I knew about 'dunk and roll'). Vermiculite works well .... I second RR advice.
Is the reservoir thing still being done ? post dunk and roll ? The dunk should hydrate your cakes and the roll should provide the humid, evaporative environment on the cakes exterior .....

So your plan is to mix rice with rocks? Don't sound so good. It don't hold water it evaporates it well. Thats about the same as putting some gravel or glass in it. It will just take up room.

also the way you are thinking of how it evaporates water is wrong it is done threw surface area of the rocks and why we try and rake it a bit to make more surface area when you have it all stuck up with rice it wont be evaporating anything it will just be taken up room

if properly hydrated grains on their own work very well. why mess about with it? just learn how to do the proven stuff before you mess around or you will end up wasting a loadmof time.
