 theory on time...

hm im not sure exactly how to say this so im just gonna say it =). i was thinking about time recently and well i think most people can agree time is always variable...best put by einstein when he said give a kid some candy and 1 min will seem like a few seconds...put the kid on a burning stove and 1 min will seem like 1 hr (or something like that) well what if we all felt time differently? what if 1 min for me seemed like 1 hr for you. theres no way of knowing how fast time goes by for each of us cuz we cant go into other peoples heads and because of how we measure time using seconds and minutes 1 minute could seem like 1 second or 1 hr. hmmmmm i would go on but im not sure how to explain this so ill just shut up...=)

i think of it this way.
every moment that ever happened or ever will happen is in one moment, but our brains can't handle everything at once, so it seperates it out into time.
i don't know how time is for you.
i don't know how apples taste to you.
in fact, everybody might as well be in their own universe for that matter.
but we aren't. we are here, together. so when you say "one mintue" you mean one minute as it is to you. but when you say "one minute" i think of one mintue as it is to me. so in essence, it may be mind boggling, but it doesn't really matter since on the outside we see the same thing. good thought though.

yeah i agree wit cha. i believe everything does happen at once and if you see it how it should happen it is beautiful...everything fits into place. time doesnt even really exist. its no more real than feet or inches or gallons...its just a measurement. if time wasnt invented we wouldnt know how to rely on it and we wouldnt have the feeling of time. time was just invented to make us more "efficient".

I think you are correct when you say that time can be variable (our perception of time, that is), and you are correct that we cannot go into other people's heads; but I do not think it is possible for what seems like one minute to one person to seem like an hour to another.
Since we were born, we have been raised into a world of clocks and calendars... Each one of us learns to categorize time into seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, and years...
We cannot perceive time with any of our senses (with the exception of looking at a clock of course), but I think there is some sort of time-perceiving device ingrained in our heads.
For example, if someone asked you to tell them when a minute was up (without counting in your head or anything like that), you would probably be able to give a pretty accurate guess as to when a minute had ended. Also, have you ever set a timer for something, left the room, and then returned back to the room around the same time that the timer was set to go off? I know this has happened to me, and I think it also shows we have some sort of time-perceiving device ingrained in our head.
What I think is interesting, though, is how our time perception can sometimes change (as you said). The old addage "time flies when you're having fun" comes to mind. Usually when we are doing something fun, or have our attention focused on something intently (TV for example), time can seem to go by very quickly.
There are also instances when time can seem to pass very slowly. An example that comes to mind is when we are sitting in a room at a doctor's office, waiting for the doctor to arrive. I know time in this situation always seems to drag by for me 
Certain drugs can also change our perception of time. There've been times when I've been on certain substances and literally felt like everything was in slow motion. This sort of thing can also happen, say, in the seconds before impact during an iminent car crash. You know you are about to collide with the vehicle in front of you within seconds, yet it seems to take forever to occur.
I think all of these situations might have to do with chemical changes in our brain affecting that built in time-perceiving device that I spoke of.

hey genius....
i think people's perceptions of time are generally well aligned. if one person's perception of "1 minute" was really "1 hour" then i imagine no one would ever get to work on time and people would have difficulty having conversations since your compatriot might take an hour (only a few seconds in his mind) to respond, etc. also, if you have ever had your perception of time altered by drugs you know that it is impossible to actually do an eternity of things in 1 minute even if that minute really does feel like an eternity.

I dont know what time is, but here are some thoughts:
- The faster you think, the slower time appears to you. On some drugs, when you feel time slow down, it is because your brain is operating on overdrive. You have more thoughts per time unit.
- We travel forward in time, but aren't able to go backwards. Therefore, time seems to be only "half" a dimension. Or, we can only access half of it.

was it plato or aristotle that said we are like specks of dust in the wind? time is winds, and we move with it, floating along like specks of dust. medidtate on that with your favorite drug. it gets deeper the longer you think about it.

A movie i recommend watching that i think relates to this subject is the "Time Machine". Not only is the plot good, but it does a superb job of showing how we are just specs of dust in the wind. It really puts things into perspective. After watching the movie, things i considered a big deal didnt seem as big. We are all just caught up in a chaotic whirlpool we call life.

there's no such thing as time. everything that has, is and will happen already has. our universe is just a huge smear across the void and you might imagine it as an explosion, then implosion. it all happened that fast, but we are riding it out subjectively so it seems to go much slower... it's all relative...

actually, if you (damn it, i hate referring to this book so much) read the science of God by schroeder, he says that time is believed to actually move faster the closer to the center of the universe you get. and as the universe balloons outwards, time changes.
also, i can't believe nobody has posted the theory of relativity yet.

That may be true but time is always relative. For example if you where near the center of a black hole time will remain constant to you, but to a person on the edge of a black time would also be constant to them. But the person near the center of the black hole would see the person on the edge age quicker. Even though time for that person would still be the same. It sorta like travaling on a bus going 50mph and throwing a ball to a person across from you to that person the ball is travaling say 1mph but to a person walking down the street watching the ball on the bus go by it will be travaling at 51mph. I hope I have explained this well.

the speed of something also includes the time it takes to get there... it was another way of saying, time is relative.
if a train is going down the tracks during a rainstorm and a man holds a cubical mirror out the window, and lighting flashes, it would flash on one side of the mirror a split second before it flashed on the other side. by cubical i mean a four sided mirror.

hey yo, i got that off of kera channel thirteen braa. that's all i know. they show guy in train with...well, just like i described.
so ya man, does the light remain constant? if light was everywhere, then there would be no such thing as the speed of light. and if it has a speed, then it would mean it takes time to travel to it's destination. and if one side of the mirror is slightly farther from the light source, then would the light reach them at the same time? am i wrong? i could be. i think so abst ract, it's a stuggle to get these things out so other people can understand them. peace braa.
