It's not necessary, but it can produce a better pinset than nothing at all.

so no casing is neccassary with a monotub? once the substrate, say coir, is colonized, you just expose to light and lower the temp a bit to initiate pinning?

Yes. Monotubs create their own relative humidity. That is the beauty of them.

I've always cased my monotubs.. works good imho.

Yeah definitely use a casing layer, if you don't use one it's hard to get the humidity high enough for it to pin.

If you were to have an enclosed environment with a cool mist pumping it up to 90-100% constantly... would there be any benefit to a casing layer? Is there any other important purpose to the casing layer other than maintaining humidity?
